London holds first gay employment fair

Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Brian Paddick and representatives from the Trades Union Congress' (TUC) lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) committee will be among the guest speakers next month at London's first gay employment exposition

PACE, an LGBT mental health group and the London Development Agency (LDA) will host Out Working: Youth LGBT Job Fair, which promises to offer unemployed and economically inactive gay, lesbian and bisexual youths hands-on advice from experts at The Resource Centre in Islington on Thursday, 17 August 2006.

Young people will hear Mr Paddick explain his rise to deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police and how he found success in unlikely places. Patrick Williams, speaking on behalf of the TUC's LGBT committee, will discuss tackling homophobia in the workplace. Other speakers, including career coach Alison Clark

and gay entrepreneur, PinkNews.co.uk consultant editor Benjamin Cohen will discuss how to get your dream job and how to start your own business.

Mr Cohen will talk about the opportunities for young people in the world of small business. Illustrating the advantages and disadvantages of trying to go it alone

Rosemary Watt-Wyness, chief executive officer of PACE said: "Out Working is the first event of its kind in the Capital to offer young people from the LGBT community insider tips on landing their dream job or becoming their own boss and getting on the right career path.

"London's LGBT youth community offers a large, untapped pool of skills, and by helping them link to gay-friendly employers their talents can be fully utilised and all Londoners stand to benefit."

In addition to expert speakers, attendees will have access to individual life coaching sessions with The Pink Coach, Angie South.

Recruiters from many of the UK's top gay-friendly businesses will also be on hand to advise youths on what it takes to land that first job and get started on their intended career path.

Travel to the event will be provided for all attendees.
