US talk show host Oprah Winfrey has moved to quash rumours that she is in a lesbian relationship.

Winfrey, host of the US's most highly rated talk show, told the Oprah Magazine, that people are misunderstanding her 30 year relationship with best friend, Gayle King.

She told the magazine, of which King is an editor, that she would not ashamed of being gay, "I understand why people think we're gay, there isn't a definition in our culture for this kind of bond between women.

"So I get why people have to label it, how can you be this close without it being sexual?"

King said: "The truth is, if we were gay, we would tell you, because there's nothing wrong with being gay."
