Guernsey Chief Minister Laurie Morgan has signalled that the island may follow neighbouring Jersey’s lead in lowering the gay age of consent.

His remarks came after the issue was raised at a meeting of the Crown Dependencies of Guernsey, Jersey, and the Isle of Man, after the fellow Channel Island of Jersey lowered the age of gay consent from 18 to 16 recently.

Mr Morgan said: “It’s inevitable that we will have to look closely at that. The Health and Social Services Department believes it is something it should be progressing as part of its conformity with the human rights legislation.

“We have so much in common with the other two Crown Dependencies and Alderney and Sark, it would be foolish of us not to meet regularly.”

The issue will be brought to The House later this year, The Guernsey Press and Star reports.

Earlier this month politicians in Jersey’s State Assembly voted for a new sexual offences law that will reduce the age of consent for gay sex to 16.
