Lesbian wins compensation for sexual harassment at taxi firm
An overweight lesbian has been awarded €12,480 in compensation for sexual harassment by work colleagues at a taxi firm.
The Irish Equality Tribunal heard that the woman (who can not be named for legal reasons) suffered from a harassment campaign that saw her pelted with dead fish and being sent photographs with her head superimposed on naked bodies.
The woman who worked at Checkers Cabs in Dublin suffered from laxatives and steroids being placed in the kettle she used. The firm's owners acknowledged that some of the incidents took place but denied that the company has an anti-female policy.
Tribunal director Melanie Pine found that "each of the various incidents, and in particular the display of grossly offensive pictures, were unwelcome and could reasonably be regarded as sexually, or otherwise on the gender ground, offensive and humiliating."
Following the award of €12,480, Checkers Cabs maintained that "the actions of a handful of drivers did not mean that the company generally discriminated against women"
