First Lady opposes gay marriage campaign tool
The first lady has warned against using the controversial Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage as a campaign tool.
Laura Bush pushed for sensitivity over the upcoming Senate debate about entrenching marriage as a male and female union in the Constitution.
Her husband, President George W Bush, supports the amendment, Mrs Bush told Fox News Sunday, "I don't think it should be used as a campaign tool, obviously.
"It requires a lot of sensitivity to just talk about the issue, a lot of sensitivity.
"People, I have found, over the country don't want the governor of Massachusetts or the mayor of San Francisco to make the choice for them, the courts of Massachusetts, I should say. So I think it deserves debate. I think it's something that people want to talk about."
Meanwhile Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of Vice President Dick Cheney, who opposes the bill, appeared on Fox News and said: "Amending the Constitution with this amendment, this piece of legislation, is a bad piece of legislation. It is writing discrimination into the Constitution, and, as I say, it is fundamentally wrong."
