Gay groups in the US and South Africa are backing a campaign to establish a new top level domain for the LGBT community.

A top-level domain or domain name (TLD) is the highest level of domain names in the root zone of the Domain Name System of the Internet.

The campaigners want the TLD .gay (DOTgay) to be approved for use by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).

It operates the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) and is in charge of maintaining the DNS root zone.

According to www.dotgay.com, ICANN implemented a handful of new TLD’s in 2000 and 2004.

“Since 2005 ICANN drafts a policy that will allow hundreds of new TLD’s to be implemented.

“According to ICANN’s current schedule the first applications can be filed in the first half of 2010.

“According to that schedule dotGAY would go live in by the end of 2010.”

Campaigners say the gay community will benefit.

“The gay community has roughly 15 million members in the United States and tens of millions world wide.

“Millions of internet websites are targeted on the gay community.

“A well managed top level domain .gay will help to connect the gay end user and those who try to reach out to him.”
