Gay councillors from across the political spectrum are feeling confident as the local elections reach the halfway stage this afternoon.

Local elections are taking place today in 144 English authorities and all 32 of London's boroughs.

PinkNews.co.uk spoke to a selection of gay candidates standing for some of the 4,360 council seats.

Charles Anglin is a Liberal Democrat Candidate for the London Borough of Lambeth, he told PinkNews.co.uk, "I think the Party will make gains around the country.

"In Lambeth I think it will be a good result, but it's close."

In the London Borough of Hackney, residents will vote for a councillor as well as a mayor. Alan Laing, a Labour candidate in the Hackney Central Ward, told PinkNews.co.uk, "It is looking positive in Hackney for Labour."

Andrew Boff is a Conservative candidate for the mayoral post in Hackney, he told PinkNews.co.uk, "People seem to be turning out, the real action is between 7 and 10."

"We are trying to get people to take a break during EastEnders to vote for the real EastEnders"

Polling stations close at 10pm.
