The executive director of the Chicago Gay Games has been fired, just 10 weeks before the start of the event.

Kevin Boyer, co vice chairman of the event, confirmed that Brian McGuiness has been replaced as the event organiser after he had worked on the scheme for a year.

Mr Boyer revealed a new structure which he claimed would support and improve the ability of all the departments.

He told the Windy City Times, "The new structure was evolving out of a need for additional collaboration. This is the third structural change, based on the need for additional collaboration. Previously, we had changed based on visibility and fiscal financial planning.

"The second phase was around registration and sponsorship development and additional sports and logistic planning. This third phase is the logistics, operations and execution phase.

"This isn't really a dramatic difference in what has been happening over the last couple of months as we've evolved. To the outside world, this might appear as a significant change that is very close to the Games, but, for our purposes, it sort of represents a codification of what we're already doing and the model that we had almost gotten to."

Mr McGuinness will be replaced by Christee Snell.

Gay Games VII Sports and Cultural Festival will take place 15-22 July 2006. Over 12,000 athletes from more than 100 countries will compete in 30 sports ranging from softball to dancesport, swimming to tennis.
