A trans woman who went on hunger strike after her local primary care trust refused to fund her gender reassignment has been told it will now pay for her hormone medication.

Debbie Davies was born male but has lived as a woman for 18 months. She previously bought her hormone pills online but became unable to afford them.

In May, she went on a hunger strike, saying Nottinghamshire PCT had refused to fund her treatment.

It has now written to her to confirm it will pay for hormone therapy and gender reassignment surgery.

At the time, she told BBC News: "I've paid £25,000 out of my own money and I haven't got anything else – the health authority have some responsibility to support and treat me.

"Hormone treatment is literally pounds a week, it's not an expensive process.

"Obviously there's a medical side that goes with that as well, the final surgery is about £10,000.

"As long as I fulfil my part of the bargain and live as a woman for two years, then it's there."
