Sir Elton John's vampire musical has been crucified by critics after its Broadway premiere last night.

It is "beyond rescue" according to trade newspaper Variety and the New York Times dubbed it a "musical sleeping pill," despite many parts being changed from its San Francisco run, which also got poor reviews.

The gay star's show was labelled "laughable" and "deadly dull" by the Hollywood Reporter.

Lestat, a story based on Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire, is now open on Broadway and written by the gay superstar.

Sir Elton, who also wrote hit show, Billy Elliot, has collaborated with Bernie Taupin for this performance at the Palace Theatre in New York following a stint in San Francisco.

He said: "I'd be an absolute liar if I said I'm not nervous about it being a flop.

"All I know is that we've done the best we can."
