Lezzabella – again, no I'm not RobN (see Obama thread), give it up woman.

Simon Murphy – I can't speak for RobN, but I disagree about whether fundies will find less-camp people more acceptable. I think they will. In the same way that they will be more accepting of black/Asian people not in religious dress or who have an accent closer to their own. I agree, it's incredibly superficial, but then don't gays label all fundies as the same? Don't we label all Muslims the same, you know "religious types"? There is probably as much variation amongst the right-wing conservatives as there is there is amongst gay people. Camp guys that whine about us non-camp types need to lighten up too in that case. Straight-acting isn't a word I would use as, like you say, it is only for straight people that do straight things. There is nothing straight about same-sex intercourse. However, I would use the term non-camp, as it gets to the point a bit better.

Rob – there is nothing straight acting about having sex with someone of the same sex as you regardless of how you behave otherwise.

Some gay guys are camp. Some gay guys are not. But both are equally valid.

At the end of the day the religious fundies hate gay people for being gay. Not the type of gay they are.

Gay people who whine about gay stereotypes need to lighten up and try to accept their sexuality a bit more. Just because you may not be instantly recognisable as gay does not mean that the fundies like you or find you any more acceptable.

And guys, stop being so harsh on RobN – all you are doing is confirming what he thinks about the gay scene in general: that scene queens are insular and discriminating to those that do not conform to their way of life. Calling him a weirdo and suggesting he is psychologically unstable is a bit puerile and makes you all look defensive. I'm sorry that you feel that way, but if you were a little more open-minded you might see that there are quite a few of us out there who are happy as non-camp gay guys with no interest in becoming a celebrity. Why on Earth should we accept your variant of gay man if you won't accept us for what we are? Spare me the hypocrisy, we get that enough elsewhere……

True about this Mr Gay UK guy being a bit exploited by calculating TV execs, but then he did enter both Mr Gay UK and BB by himself, which shows he must like attention. He's old enough to know what he's getting into and is responsible for the outcome, so I don't want to hear him complaining after the show about how cruel everyone was. Touchen up. We know these shows are vile and designed to see people spitting venom at one another. Hence why I don't watch it – I've only done so to see what the fuss was about.

Great, yet another "gay community" representative to get us all tarred with the camp, slutty himbo brush. Being a bit camp is one thing, but being so outrageous and cheap is nothing to do with being comfortable in your own skin – it merely magnifies how deeply insecure they are by seeking to attract that level of attention. Positive or negative. And then those of us that are not behaving as they are immediately get slammed by the camp guys for being "self-hating". As if we were somehow so self-loathing that we seek to distance ourselves from what we really should be – queens. Just the reason why I never go out on the gay scene, it's just a mentality I don't relate to. But this is all merely confirmation that not all gay guys think and act alike, which the straight community ought to know. It's like assuming all of Britain were fat and chavvy because that's what we see in The Sun everyday.

I'm not sure where all this "pride" comes from – or why people feel the need to keep re-iterating it. I'm just proud about being (or trying to be) a decent, respectful, polite and educated human. How can you be proud of your sexuality when it's nothing you have personally achieved? It's not like you have to study hard and work intensively to attain "gayness". It's biological, it's as mad as being proud of being blond or brunette. I'm just a normal guy and accept myself for what I am, it's kind of annoying that I keep being urged to conform to unflattering stereotypes or should live with an attention-seeking chip on my shoulder!

I wouldnt consider myself a camp gay man, but it really grinds my nerve when other people bitch about camp gay men or butch lesbian people as to say why do they have to act like that. It is quite simply who they are. In many ways it is easier for us gays who arent percieved as being gay, but only because people don't actually realise that we are gay, and that in its self isn't much to be proud of. i applaud any camp people who are strong enough to stand up every day and be the person they are, just as I would applaud any gay man who is out and proud, but that is the key word, PROUD, it does no favours for our community when people like RobN whine about so called 'mincers,' who are you fighting for here Rob? the comunity or yourself. it seems to me that you blame camp people create the negative stereotyoes that gay people as a community face, but there you are wrong. they only enrich our identity and if you took a closer look at the people who have won your rights to be gay in society then you will see that they are not fighting for themself, not even for the right to be gay, but for the acceptance of everyone for who they are, the ideals of which are far sretching outside our comminuity. Rob some people are camp…get over it. you sound like some of my straight mates who make similar comments about how annoying camp people are. When I first came out, I too struggled with the same preceptions of the gay community and perhaps got too hung up on the preception that if your gay you have to be as camp as grayham norton and found it hard to understand, accept and be proud of being gay. thankfully with the passing of time, having learnt about our community and meeting people in our diverse crowd. i quickly realised that no we don't all conform to a stereotype of being camp and limp wristed, but by golly the so called 'camp' people know how to entertain and a lot of people enjoy watching them on tv… there is no conspiricy to make everyone believe we are all camp and limpwristed and there are pleanty of people in the media who are gay and not camp… perhaps your gay dar needs a bit of a tune. RobN let go of your inhibitions and be free!!!

I actually watch the show (for which I will accept no critisism).

On entering the house, the two blond girls ogled Charlie (who looks and sounds like a young Paul Gascoigne) and were heard to whisper to each other "Do you think he's gay or straight" and concluded that he was "yes, definately straight, a real lad's lad".

So there you have it. Not stereotypically camp. But a lad's lad? Well, yes – but in more ways than they are yet to realise.
