If she'd had a seizure or heart attack as a direct consequence of what he said they might have some sort of case, but if she overreacts and is too clumsy to look where she's going as she runs off that's hardly direct cause and effect. If he'd tripped her up as she ran past, that would be different. In life, surprises and shocks occasionally happen, but if I'd been startled by a traffic accident on the other side of a road and ran into a tree, I'd have no-one to blame but myself.
