Beth Ditto: Katy Perry is ‘offensive to gay culture’
Beth Ditto, frontwoman of band The Gossip, has openly criticised Katy Perry and her notorious single ‘I Kissed a Girl’ for being “offensive to gay culture”.
In an interview with Attitude magazine, Ditto explained her condemnation, saying: “She’s just riding on the backs of our culture without having to pay any of the dues and not being actually lesbian or anything at all. She’s on the cover of a f—–g gay magazine.”
Katy Perry’s chart-topping single ‘I Kissed a Girl’ was allegedly inspired by her appreciation of Scarlett Johansson’s beauty, despite Perry being straight.
She told Stepping Out magazine: “I was with my boyfriend at the time, and I said to him ‘I’m not going to lie – If Scarlett Johansson walked into the room and wanted to make out with me, I would make out with her. I hope you’re okay with that?'”
But Ditto found her adoption of a faux-gay attitude phony, calling the song a “boner dyke anthem for straight girls who like to turn guys on by making out or, like, faking gay.”
“I hate Katy Perry […] I’m so offended,” Ditto said, before stating she would like to start a “band feud” with the pop starlet.
Winner of last year’s Glamour International Artist Of The Year Award, Ditto is in a long term relationship with her partner Freddie, who she describes as a ‘gender radical’.
The Gossip’s breakthrough single, Standing In The Way Of Control, was written as a response the opposition faced by the gay and lesbian community from Republicans over the issue of same-sex marriage.
