A New York university will host a gay prom this evening.

Members of Binghamton University's Rainbow Pride Union (RPU) are hosting the University's first gay prom tonight, intending to celebrate diversity, and to re-create a generic high school prom where all sexualities are welcome.

"It's very straightforward as a prom," Lyn Nelson, RPU's co-director of events, told Pipe Dream, the university's paper.

Prom-goers will be supplied with non-alcoholic cocktails, hors d'oeuvres and music provided by a DJ. The dress code is formal, or semi-formal.

Ms Nelson said the event provides an opportunity for everyone to experience the rite of passage.

It is open to all BU students, and also to local high schools.

Ms Nelson said: "We want to broaden our horizons as an organisation," a

"It's an opportunity for people to mingle."

Gay proms are being arranged across America ranging from high schools to adults. A dance held in Long Island in 2001 received coverage from over 50 media organisations.

RPU event directors are hoping that this year's gay prom will be the first of many.
