Johnny, the RC Church definitely casts a long shadow over the two Irelands, but I doubt that the Orangemen are any more pro-marriage equality than the RCs.

I'm not suprised that there are lies about the Irish Constitution--when all else fails, the religious wrong resorts to lies.

I was at this rally and the attendance was at least 600 - and maybe closer 10 800 or 900. The great weather really helped and I held a banner proudly aloft. Eloise and Rory (aka Panti) gave superb speeches.

The government are dithering and prevaricating on this issue and constantly long-fingering it. The gay comminity of Ireland is truly FED UP at this stage. Either the government legislates for full equality or it doesn't.

Ireland firstly needs a change of government before we see full equality happening. FF are gutless and spineless cowards who are afraid and unwilling to introduce full equality for LGBT people in Ireland. They kowtopw to the religious and backward in this country. They are yesterday's government. They are an utter disgrasce. They are unfit to govern the Ireland on 2009. They need the red card now!

The Catholic Church still casts a long shadow over Ireland both North and South. I agree with Simon there is no excuse at all for such bare faced deceit. Equality NOW.

Absolutely agree with Simon Murphy. Didn't think about that line before, but clearly that is an option. Also, it's great to see that a majority support sequal rights!

The Irish governments claim that full marriage would require a change to the constitution (and therefore a referendum) is a barefaced lie. True the constitution refers to 'he' and 'she' and 'husband' and 'wife' whenever it refers to marriage. But likewise it refers to the Irish President as 'he' throughout also. When Mary Robinson ran for office of Irish President in 1990 it was declared that a referendum on whether she be allowed to run was unnecessary as the constitution was meant to evolve with the times. It is now largely accepted that gay rights are a civil rights issue. Therefore it is unacceptable for the majority of the population to determine whether or not access to a legal contract (marriage) is allowed to a law abiding minority. The government is using the constitution as a diversionary tactic to avoid having to address equality. And they should not be permitted to do so.
