Vermont could soon allow gay marriage

The Vermont Senate has voted 23-5 to override Governor Jim Douglas' veto of the gay marriage bill.

This leaves the decision down to the House, which is expected to vote later today.

If more than two thirds of members present vote in favour of the override, Vermont will become the fourth US state, after Massachusetts, Connecticut and Iowa, to allow gay marriage.

The Iowa Supreme Court last week ruled to allow gay marriage, saying a ban violated the state's constitution.
