While one can only admire Amnesty Internatinal, but asking the Pope to defend gay rights, would be like going into St.Paul's and offering to re-write the bible. It ain't gonna happen, my dears. I think we are better-off choosing to mock him at every given opportunity, or better still – ignore the silly old goat.

This is an incredibly clever and timely manoeuver by Amnesty!

They now have him backed into a corner. Either he stands by the words of the Holy See in December 2008 when it said that it

“continues to advocate that every sign of unjust discrimination towards homosexual persons should be avoided, and urges states to do away with criminal penalties against them."

in the face of the government of a country he is visiting which does NOT do this, or he refuses to do so and shows himself to be the Nazi pig that so many of us believe him to be.

Why be surprised by another news item highlighting the Vatican's timeless propensity to safeguard antiquated doctrines over the well-being of humanity? As a cradle Catholic, I was surprised and delighted by John XXIII's tremendous attempt to lead the Church towards the times in which we live, but not so much surprised as deeply hurt by the mindless, powerful right-wing reaction to the Council. Moreover, I am forever appalled by the revolting North American sex scandals which have drained a cool 2.6 billion dollars from Church coffers so far (see this week's National Catholic Reporter). The Vatican's current shameful refusal to support world-wide decriminalization of homosexuality is best understood in the words of Prof. Louis Crompton of Nebraska U.: a deduction from the enormous debt Western Civilization owes to the healthier side of Christianity. As thinking Catholics, we are called to transcend religion, nurture our gay spirituality, and live as best we can by the Golden Rule. Bravo Amnesty.

Davis Mac-Iyalla – the only 'treat' the pope is capable of providing Africa is if they landed his private plane smack in the centre of a lynch mob and let him face the music. If you call an AIDS epidemic a treat, you have a pretty distorted view of reality.
Why not go the whole hog and have him deliver food parcels full of anthrax?

I think it a good idea that Amnesty International is reminding the Pope the Gospel of Jesus Christ that thou shall love your neighbour as thy self and do unto others as you want them to do to you. I still stand by my words that the Pope and his message are the big treat to Africa.

There's no point in even "showing the public" what a bigot he is.

Flapjack, I totally concur. It will expose this vile bigot for what he is. I find it rich that he can make moral judgements on gay people yet for almost two millenia the roman clergy cultists have been committing paedophilia, philandery and in some cases fathered children (still happening), mistresses on the side. He's delusional if he thinks barring gay seminarians from entering the priesthood will put a stop to paedophilia. What about the straight paedophiles, he's not addressed that one either? He's a hypocrite and certainly no christian.

Nice try, you might as well ask the BNP to persuade the KKK to cut ethnic minorities some slack.
If the pope really cared about LGBT equality and civil rights he could've put a stop to this institutional homophobia long ago. Instead of which it's business as usual.
The only thing Amnesty might achieve by this is to highlight just what a bigot Pope Benedict is, to anyone who still doesn't know.
