African Americans account for 75% of those infected in DC (as well as making up the majority population in the city) and anecdotal evidence suggests that African Americans are far more homophobic than other groups. The phenomenon of being on the 'down low' originates in African American communities ie closetted men having risky gay sex and then infecting their unknowing wives and girlfriends. The World Health Organisation says this type of homophobia is fuelling the spread of the disease in Jamaica. It would also seem to be the case in DC. It would be ironic were it not so tragic.
