Most prom-type events only specify "formal dress". I know a number of (straight) girls who wore tuxedos, and it wasn't an issue at all. Just like many girls wear trousers as part of their school uniform. As long as the people attending the prom mentioned in this story wear suitably smart clothing then what's the problem? Did the school object because they knew of the girl's sexuality or do they just have traditional ideas and wouldn't want any girl to wear a tux?
