the days of formal evening dress is so far in the past that no-one really remembers it. Are boys supposed to wear hand tied ties, or will the accept ready-tied? Must girls wear gloves? If you're playing this game, do it properly!!

A few years' ago, (also in the USA), there was a boy who was banned from wearing a dress to the school prom:

It may happen in the UK, but it's quite rare, I'd guess. Most prom-type events only specify "formal dress". I know a number of (straight) girls who wore tuxedos, and it wasn't an issue at all. Just like many girls wear trousers as part of their school uniform.
As long as the people attending the prom mentioned in this story wear suitably smart clothing then what's the problem? Did the school object because they knew of the girl's sexuality or do they just have traditional ideas and wouldn't want any girl to wear a tux? Both wrong, of course, but it'd be interesting to know.

"Do some research people, this stuff happens in almost all countries, quit trying to make it seem like the US is the only country things like this happen in.

...I am not so naive as to think that things like this only happen in the US."

Totally agree, Jay - there's often as much (and even more) sexism, homophobia and transphobia in plenty of other countries, too.

However, the point of my comment was that there is also a marked tendency for some (but, by no means all) Americans, (and Europeans), to only condemn gendered dress-codes as oppressive when they happen in certain Muslim countries - like Iran and Saudi Arabia, for example. In doing so, they miss their own faults - as evidenced by this incident, for instance.

I hate the US and I am citizen, but I am not so naive as to think that things like this only happen in the US.

Also why is this a gay/lesbian story?

Go, girl! A lesbian friend of mine wore her tux to my 40th birthday party and stole the show. I like sexy guys in tailored suits, but it's uncanny how girls can look better in them. Think of Marlene Dietrich...Besides all that, I thought a prom was a party! Let people dress for their dreams!

A woman wearing a tuxedo? The sky will fall in. What's going to stop women now from wearing pants and men from wearing shirts with prints? We're doomed, I tell you.

Sad, sad Americans. Why can't they let this woman wear what she feels comfortable in? A friend of mine wore a tux with tails and top hat to her prom a few years ago, and she had to fight for that too, and that was a school in Brighton!

Hmmm...Is this the same United States of America which criticizes certain middle-eastern countries for forcing women to wear headscarves? Perhaps then, the powers-that-be in the 'Land of the Free' believe that gendered dress codes only become reactionary, sexist and oppressive when enacted by Muslims?
