Dan, you're absolutely right about that, women do indeed commit acts of violence towards men but its usually dismissed because of the gender difference, the mindset that women don't hurt people as much as men do. How wrong that is. This is nothing more than flagrant reversed sexism towards men. I can't believe that Smith believes otherwise when it comes to abused same-sex partners and its quite apparent that we are definitely NOT treated equally. I wonder if she excludes lesbians who abuse their partners simply because they're not straight women? I wouldn't mind betting that she does. So much for equality.

@Dan. This isn't a tub thumping exercise. We know equal means equal, but just the same it's an article on gay dv. Feel free to hijack a thread over on the bbc.

There is a long history or ignoring, denying or justifying violence against men. In America it begins very early. Just try having a civil and reasonable discussion about involuntary male infant circumcision in America and you will quickly realize just how vein poppingly defensive otherwise reasonable people can be in defense of the physical assault of males.

Its not what some people want to hear, but women can be just as abusive in a relationship as men.
Equality has to mean just that, equality in everything.
The idea that all women are somehow weaker than all men should be viewed as none-equal and discriminatory, and a its a fallacy!
The number if times ive watched girls Punch and kick at boys who are expected not to respond! and when the boy does, its assault.

the Sexism in the UK runs deep, and its a comlicated issue, but to think that female on male violence and abuse is even rare is a mistake in my opinion.

some girls grow up beliving they are untouchable.

After witnessing a woman putting her husband in hospital, and then SHE is offered the protection... you start to wonder about "equality"

It is extremely strange. But we need to keep shouting and complaining about this as much as we can, so as to keep it on the agenda and not just say "well, what's the point?"

It is very bizarre, considering previous domestic abuse documents released by the government have recognised the issue of abuse in gay and lesbian relationships, that they have been left out of this consultation.

Considering that LGBT people suffering from domestic violence are recognised as a group for which there is a lack of service provision, surely the consultation should include targeted investigation of the issue?

Home secretary Jacqui Smith said: "Violence against women and girls is unacceptable in any form.

Well well, so there is discrimination against same-sex couples in a civil partnership then? I thought these partnerships were viewed the same as marriage without the name, obviously not. So I suppose lesbian partnered couples don't count either and that violence against men is acceptable in any form? They call that equality? NOT! Its beyond screwed up and discriminatory.

You'd think that the government didn't consider same-sex relationships as important, or believed men can't be victims of domestic violence. Oh wait, they do!
