I hope and believe that the Portuguese can and will look after their own. The Catholic Church is in thrall to the right-wingers and deserves to be isolated.

really hope that Portugal can follow spain in granting full gay marriage, for 2 previously very catholic countries to have moved so far forward is amazing, what next? Italy? POLAND???? Go Portugal!

I am Portuguese and to be honest I do not really think the Church will ever succeed. To give you a real figure, left wing parties occupy 67% of the Parliament and there are some right wing MPs who certainly support Gay-Marriage. Unlike Spain, Portugal's Government broke away from the Church in 1974, not even previous Right-Wing Governments paid too much attention to the Church. The people is also more worried about the economy than anything else. There are a loads of Non-Believers/Atheists and Portuguese Churches are usually empty, even the Catholic Church struggles to train new Priests and put unattended Churches running. To finalise, there is only 1 openly Christian Party in the Parliament – CDS-PP, which took 6% of the votes – and even in this Party the leader is Gay… Do you need more words? I do not think so.

There's no way this Church's rant will affect the coming elections. They were incapable to stop the referendum on abortion legalization. Portuguese society is very different now. Close to celebrate 35 years of liberty, we're slowly becoming an open-minded society, free from the ghosts of the past that Salazar's dictatorship and the Vatican imposed on our fathers and grand-fathers. Although this reflects an harsh political move to get votes from the left-oriented youth, I can only be glad, to say the least, and I hope someday I'll see my country among the first in respecting human values. I know that we'll probably still one of the poorest, always riding in Europe's economic tail, but, hey, nobody is perfect!

Further evidence of the vicious, evil, undemocratic nature of the catholic cult (and organised religion). When will those deranged facists realise that just because their own cult promotes hatred and bigotry that it does not give them the right to pervert democracy and human rights.
