Astonishingly, his two older brothers were also RC priests. Their father was a doctor. I mean to say, what sort of father would allow three of his sons to enter the priesthood. It just beggars belief.

Flapjack: this is the (Catholic) Cardinal of Westminster. Nothing at all to do with the (Anglican) Bishop of Carlisle.

The Cardinal isn't saying anything radically new in itself – the unity of the Catholic churches has long been a goal in ecumenical dialogue predating even the Second Vatican Council – but what is remarkable is how out of kilter this kind of talk now is with the line emerging from Rome. Benedict XVI has been rolling back all the progressive measures of Vatican II (or at least interpreting them in a very restrictive way), so that the message emerging from the Vatican now seems to be not that there must be dialogue between the Catholic and Anglican Churches, but rather that the Anglican Communion must accommodate itself to the requirements of Rome, especially on the issue of women priests. But this is never going to happen. The C of E is too far down that road already.

Who cares whether the catholics and anglicans want to have premarital sex (using contraception – shock horror) with each other. Their sets of beliefs are equally ludicrous and pointless. So long as neither of those headcults get involved in trying to influence politics then I couldn't care less what they do.

Is this the same Bishop of Carlisle who took the recent flooding in Carlisle as God's punishment on gays while failing to notice his own Church was flooded!
Could it be A. a random natural weather event, or B. God hates the bichop of Carlisle? No – of course not, the logical answer was C. The Church wasn't homophobic enough so God is angry with the church for not beating up on the gays.
