Churchgoers have expressed shock after finding adverts for lesbian encounters in their Catholic newspaper.

The advertisement appeared in Alive, an Irish church magazine, from a "Catholic lady" looking for a lesbian partner.

It said, "Single Catholic lady, 38, seeks female companion for fun trip to Lesbania" and included a box number for replies.

The request is believed to be a prank, but it is unclear how editors missed the material. One shocked worshipper told the Irish Mirror, "It's a disgrace. We always bring it home after mass but not this month.

"If the children see this they will have a great snigger. I'd say it was put in by someone just doing it for the laugh, but it will cause offence to older people.

"What next, advertisements for Stringfellows?"
