Denmark, which was the first nation to introduce civil unions (or partnerships as they are called there) in 1989, is only barely catching up now with legislation on par with same-sex marriage introduced much later by progressive, fast-track nations. It took 20 years to do in Denmark what it has taken no time to achieve in recent years in nations such as Belgium, Holland, and Spain. The slowly-slowly approach has its drawbacks.
