The Catholic church – the institution that gave us the 1000 year Dark Ages, the murder of tens of thousands during the inquisition, including priests who wanted to reform the church. And the Hatred of Jews, which was a key lever which hitler used to gain total power.

And the current pope shows us an example of what happens to people's psyches when the grow up as a youth in Germany in the 1930s.

Absolute power, absolute control, etc. Sound familiar with someone else in hisotry whose name will be despised until the end of time.

Gays are just the newest victims.

Shay …. There's no way the Catholic Church would kick all gays out of Ireland – they already have a serious shortage of priests! Kicking out the gays would make the priest-shortage worse and weaken the control the hierarchy wants to have over the country and its politicians. Mind you, if they could, it would be interesting to see how many [homophobic] bishops and serior clergy would be 'emigrating' !!!!!

The sooner they pass this thing the sooner foreign partners of gay Irish citizens will be able to stay in the Republic with them. And yet the Catholic church STILL has problems with mere recognition. If they had their way they'd kick all gay people out of the country much less keeps couples apart.

While I agree with you Simon, I do think this is the best that Fianna Fail could ever come up with. Not that its any excuse, that shower of catholic pandering muppets would have us all wearing pink triangles again if they had their way, but they'll never have the courage to do what's right unless its involves a brown paper envelope stuffed with money. As for the Green Party, they are even more spineless… and they'll never get my vote again.

I chose to look at this as a start… when Ireland sees that the world isn't coming to an end, and "normal" marriage isn't falling apart because its being "devalued" by these partnership rights, it'll put us a step closer to the marriage goal for those who wish to chose that option.

At least this legislation will give some of us in relationships some protection.

It is horribly disappointing that the Irish government decided to introduce discriminatory legislation – civil partnerships – instead of full marriage equality. Their claims that gay marriage require a referendum is rubbish and is being used as an excuse. The particularly disappointing thing is the cowardly behaviour of the Green Party who prior to the last election pretended they supported equality but as soon as they entered power they betrayed their gay constituency by settling for civil partnership.
