Potential president backs gay marriage
A potential candidate for the 2008 US presidency has stated his support for gay marriage.
Senator Russ Feingold, who is seen as a left wing choice if he stands for the 2008 elections, gave his backing to gay and lesbian marriage rights in reaction to amendments in several states looking to overturn such laws.
He told the Associated Press, "Gay and lesbian people in our country are fighting a mean-spirited movement to harm them and to discriminate against them.
"I stand with them against that movement, and I'm proud to stand with them."
Other potential presidential candidates include US Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and former First Lady Hillary Clinton.
