I a sick of religions demanding and expecting the right to discriminate. It's good that about 50% of catholic adoption agencies have decided not to punish vulnerable children by obeying the law. The ones who refuse to obey the law must be shut down and all their state finances given to agencies who don't wish to discriminate.

Sexuality is an intrinsic human quality. Religion is merely an obviously made up point of view. When it comes to a clash between the two , it should be no contest. And rightly so.

Most of these children don't have any religious preference and therefore shouldn't be subjected to a Catholic upbringing or any religious upbringing that discrimnates for any reason. All these kids want is a home with loving parents who will take care of them.

I'd like to take a less cynical stand point in that while many of the religious leaders associated with these agencies stated they would not comply with the law, the views of those on the adoption committees and involved in the actual decision making process was often quite different.

Of the gay and lesbian couples who I know with children, several of them are practising Christians, so it is certainly significant for faith-based adoption agencies to open their doors to a wider pool of adoptive parents. I wouldn't have thought it stopped them dealing with unmarried heterosexual couples. . .

Presumably highly paid jobs within agencies were at stake if an agency decided to close down. Well seen their consciences don’t bother them on that score.

Navanethem Pillay, the United Nations high commissioner for human rights spoke there last month saying, "That just like apartheid laws that criminalized sexual relations between different races, laws against homosexuality are increasingly becoming recognized as anachronistic and inconsistent both with international law and with traditional values of dignity, inclusion, and respect for all."
Apartheid: A system of laws applied to one category of citizens in order to isolate them and keep them from having privileges and opportunities given to all others.
Stop gay apartheid.
