Two of the biggest stumbling blocks re equality in Australia are that the major Christian Churches, who are also the Federally funded providers of many government health, community and education services, are exempt from anti-discrimination legislation. In other words, they can and do abuse their GLBTI employees without fear of prosecution. Further, the actual anti-discrimination legislation sets such a high threshold test that it makes it virtually impossible for any GLBTI person who has been subjected to discrimination, harassment or vilification to successfully bring a course of action against any perpetrator. That the Federal Government recently appointed two well-known homophobes to become national 'men's health ambassadors' gives some indication of just how backward Australia is when it comes to human rights for GLBTI people.
