28 February 2008Second man released in gay village murder investigation 1 A 66-year-old man, arrested on Monday on suspicion of murder of Craig Douglas, has been freed on police bail pending further inquiries until 24th March.A 49-year-old man who was also arrested in connection with the incident was earlier released without charge.Inquiries into the circumstances of Mr Douglas' death continue and police are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. -

28 February 2008Parents pay tribute to son murdered in gay village 1 The parents of a 25-year-old man who was killed in Manchester city centre have paid tribute to their son.Craig Douglas, who was straight and a father and stepfather, died on Monday after he was stabbed on Canal Street.At about 7.30pm that evening, Craig and another man were approached by two men and the four got into an argument on Canal Street close to its junction with Minshull Street and Aytourn Street. -
27 February 2008Gay charity wins councils grant + Galop has said it will use £300,000 funding from London's councils to improve its advice service for victims of homophobic hate crime.Galop is a safety charity for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community.Theirs was one of five projects supporting the victims of hate crimes and promoting social cohesion have been given a total of £800,000 by London Councils. -
27 February 2008Survey reveals extent of homophobic crime in Brighton + It is often regarded as the most gay-friendly place in the UK, but new research has revealed that transphobic and homophobic crime are a fact of life for many in Brighton.The Count Me In survey by Dr Kath Browne, from the University of Brighton, and the Spectrum forum, revealed that 73% of lesbian, bisexual, trans or gay residents have been the victim of a hate crime.The same number said they avoid public displays of affection. -
27 February 2008Police officer loses promotion over gay Facebook entries + Bedfordshire police have withdrawn a job offer to an Inspector with the British Transport police after discovering he was the subject of a written warning over his Facebook profile.Chris Dreyfus, who is gay, had been offered the rank of Chief Inspector, but a background check revealed the disciplinary action.On his Facebook page Inspector Dreyfus had posted graphic details of his sex life and photos of him posing in his uniform at a tube station in London. -
27 February 2008Teen’s murder outrages trans groups in Florida 43 Simmie Williams Jr, 17, was gunned down last weekend on a street corner in Broward County, Florida.Williams was wearing a dress when he was attacked and is believed to have been gay or transgender.Police are investigating the murder as a possible hate crime based on the words witnesses say were exchanged before the shooting. -
27 February 2008Welsh police force flies Pride flag + A second UK police force has marked LGBT History Month by flying the gay Pride flag at its headquarters.South Wales Police were named the most gay-friendly employer in Wales by gay equality organisation Stonewall earlier this year.The police force came 17th in the list of 100 top British businesses for gay people to work in. -

27 February 2008Twin porn performers arrested after robbery spree + Twin brothers, 26-year-old Taleon and Keyontyli Goffney, were arrested last week after burgling a Rite Aid pharmacy in Philadelphia.The brothers, whom gossip blogger Perez Hilton outed on his site as gay porn actors, are suspected in a spree of at least 35 other robberies over three states.The twins have appeared in videos on sites such as Blackmen.net and EbonyD.com. -
26 February 2008Pride petrol bomber jailed for attempted attack + A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 14 months in jail after being found guilty of a hate crime by a court in Croatia.Yesterday Josip Situm was convicted of endangering lives and property and ordered to undergo psychiatric treatment while behind bars.Police spotted him at the Pride event in the Croatian capital Zagreb on 7th July 2007 with petrol bombs, but he fled the scene. -

21 February 2008Toilet murder victim is named 9 A gay man who was fatally stabbed in a public toilet in Surrey known as a cruising spot has been named as Peter Jeffrey Akers.The 50-year-old from Wallington was attacked with a large carving knife at around 3pm on Tuesday in toilets near Walton Bridge that police said are "a popular meeting place for men."He was taken by air ambulance to St Peter's Hospital in Chertsey where he died at 5.30pm. -

20 February 2008Spanish judge suspended over lesbian ruling + A judge in Spain who ordered a mother to choose between her partner and her daughters, because "a homosexual environment threatened their education," has been suspended.The body which supervises the judiciary in that country, the General Council for Judicial Power, has suspended Fernando FerrÃn Calamita and a complaint about his behaviour is under investigation.The woman, from Murcia, south east Spain, was faced with the impossible choice after her husband discovered her in a compromising position with another woman.
