12:48 PM — An American gay health charity are planning to file a petition that could see a ban on the production of bareback pornography. California's AIDS Healthcare Foundation will file a petition to amend state law to mandate that all adult-film stars use condoms.

11:01 AM — China's first official gay bar has opened after a three-week delay sparked by intense media attention. Opening on Saturday evening, the bar is situated in the tourist town of Dali in the southwestern province of Yunnan. It is the first venue of its kind to receive government backing.

Gene discovery could make gender reassignment easier 19
11:15 AM — The discovery of a single gene which controls gender could pave the way for simpler treatment of trans people. Researchers at the National Institute for Medical Research discovered that just one gene prevents females from developing male physical characteristics such as facial hair and testes.

4:17 PM — A lesbian whose civil partner died after her cancer was wrongly diagnosed has won a landmark case for compensation. Tina Lane, 42, of Dorset, died of ovarian cancer in February.

Sweden to lift lifetime blood donation ban for gay men 5
6:11 PM — Sweden will allow gay and bisexual men to donate blood so long as they have not had sex with a man in the last 12 months. In a statement released today, which is World AIDS Day, the National Board of Health and Welfare confirmed the change.

Chinese city opens gay bar to tackle HIV 9
6:52 PM — The Chinese city government of Dali has opened a state-funded gay bar to tackle HIV infections. The city, in the southwestern Yunnan province, is one of the ten Chinese cities most affected by HIV and sex between men is thought to account for one third of transmissions.
Tatchell calls for an end to the blood ban on gay men 8
5:35 PM — Gay rights campaigner Peter Tatchell has called for the ban on gay and bisexual men donating blood to be abolished. Speaking ahead of World AIDS Day, which is tomorrow, Tatchell said the lifetime ban was based on "stereotyped, irrational, unscientific and homophobic assumptions".
One in five people with HIV harassed or threatened
2:59 PM — A survey into stigma around HIV has found that one in five people living with the disease has been harassed or threatened in the last year. It also found that a similar number had been refused medical treatment.

Thailand to limit gender reassignment surgery 20
5:35 PM — Thailand's government has passed stricter rules for patients seeking gender reassignment surgery. Patients will now be required to live and dress as the opposite gender for a year before surgery and must be over 18. Men aged between 18 and 20 must also gain parental consent.
HIV diagnoses for gay and bisexual men levelling off 29
3:34 PM — Figures released today show that the number of gay and bisexual men being diagnosed with HIV in the UK has fallen slightly in the last year. HIV charities say this does not mean fewer men are coming forward for testing.

New HIV infections down globally but diagnoses rise for gay men in the UK 29
5:16 PM — The UNAIDS 2009 AIDS Epidemic Update, released today, shows that new HIV infections are down by 17 per cent over the last eight years around the world. But in the last eight years, there has been a 74 per cent rise in new diagnoses of infections of gay men in the UK.
