    4:41 PM — Anna Paquin, the Hollywood actress, has said she was bemused at the fuss around her coming out as bisexual. The X Men and True Blood star filmed an advertisement in April for gay charity The True Colors Fund. In it, she says: "I'm bisexual and I give a damn."

    10:41 AM — Emmerdale has been ranked top of the main three soaps for its depiction of gays and lesbians. Gay charity Stonewall polled more than 1,000 supporters on the issue. Forty-four per cent said Emmerdale was the best, while EastEnders came second on 43 per cent. Coronation Street came last with 13 per cent of the vote.

    12:01 PM — Peter Tatchell, one of Britain's most famous gay activists, is to present a Channel 4 documentary on the Pope. Catholic figures have questioned whether he is the best person to host the programme, which will be screened ahead of Pope's September trip to the UK.

    5:24 PM — Golden Girls actress Rue McClanahan has died at the age of 76, her manager confirmed this afternoon. The star, who played Blanche Devereaux in the 1980s sitcom, had a massive stroke at 1am on Thursday morning.
