Blair criticises Vatican on gay rights 61
10:00 AM — Tony Blair has criticised the Catholic Church over its stance on gay rights. In an interview with Attittude magazine, the former prime minister said the Vatican needed to rethink "entrenched" attitudes towards homosexuality which are out of step with the feelings of most Catholics.

Gay adoption critic named as new Archbishop of Westminster 24
12:02 PM — The Most Reverend Vincent Nichols, a staunch opponent of gay adoption, has been named as the new leader of the Catholic Church in England and Wales. Archbishop Nichols, 63, will take over from Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor next month.

4:11 PM — Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the US, has called for a separation between state and religion in the signing of marriage licences. He argued that despite religious officials frequently signing marriage licences, the state should handle the legal aspect of the ceremony, leaving churches to provide blessings.

Bishop of Rochester to resign 14
1:19 PM — The Bishop of Rochester, Dr Michael Nazir Ali, has announced his intention to resign from his post to help Christians living in Islamic areas. The bishop, who has been outspoken on the topic of homosexuality, is 59 and was expected to serve until the age of 70.

Melbourne Catholic Church to ‘test’ potential priests for homosexuality 35
11:12 AM — Melbourne Catholic Church has confirmed it is following Vatican recommendations to test would-be priests to ensure they are not gay. The head of the Vatican committee which released the guidelines has also stated that celibate gays must also be banned because homosexuality is ‘‘a type of deviation’’

Complaint may block young gay minister from preaching 15
5:36 PM — A meeting is to be held to discuss whether a young gay minister should be allowed to work at a Aberdeen church. Rev Scott Rennie, 36, was appointed to Queen's Cross Church in January. However, 12 members of the Aberdeen Presbytery objected to the decision because they do not approve of his lifestyle.

Muslim preacher calls for gays to be stoned to death 54
2:37 PM — Hate preacher Anjem Choudary launched a vitrolic attack on gays last week in which he said that they should be stoned to death. The former lawyer added that this would include gay business secretary Lord Peter Mandelson.

3:58 PM — A Northern Ireland MP who said gay people could be 'turned around' and compared homosexuality to paedophilia will not be prosecuted. Iris Robinson, the MP for Strangford, was investigated by police after complaints.

10:40 AM — Preachers from the anti-gay Westboro Baptist Church have said they plan to picket a London primary school which ran lessons about gay relationships. A picket schedule on their website announces they will be at the George Tomlinson School in Leytonstone next Friday.

5:44 PM — A man has asked to be 'de-baptised', saying that he was too young to decide his religion at the age of five months. John Hunt, 56, says that he wants his 1953 baptism at the St Jude and St Aidan parish church in the Southwark diocese, south London, cancelled because he was not consulted and does not believe in God.
