Religious charity backs Tesco boycott over gay employee’s “evil Christians” remark 264
2:32 PM — The Christian Institute is backing a boycott of the supermarket Tesco after one of its employees wrote on his Flickr page that he would campaign against "evil" Christians who oppose marriage equality. Tesco has been criticised by the organisation in recent months for reducing its sizeable financial support for Cancer Research UK, while giving Pride London £30,000 to fund its family area.
Businessman acquires Birmingham’s threatened Nightingale Club 8
12:45 PM — A local businessman has bought Birmingham's iconic Nightingale Club for an undisclosed sum after the gay nightspot was put into administration. Lawrence Barton already runs the Loft Lounge, Penthouse and Village Inn venues in the city's Southside district, and says he will invest more than £1 million in the club over the coming years.

Christopher Hitchens dies after cancer battle, aged 62 38
1:21 PM — Atheist author and journalist Christopher Hitchens died last night, aged 62, at a hospital in Texas after suffering from pneumonia brought on by oesophageal cancer. In 2009, Hitchens, a vocal supporter of gay rights, revealed in his memoirs he had gay liaisons at Oxford with men who later became Tory politicians.

Petition launched to pardon gay codebreaker Alan Turing 98
1:28 PM — A petition has been launched asking the government to issue a formal pardon to the gay mathematician Alan Turing. Turing, who worked at Bletchley Park during the World War Two, was prosecuted for his sexual orientation in 1952 and obliged to undergo chemical castration. He committed suicide two years later, aged 41.
