12:00 AM — The Royal Navy is looking to increase its gay personnel, despite fears that the move could anger traditionalists within the service.Navy chiefs have been working to build bridges with the gay community for some time since the service's ban on gay and lesbian recruits was lifted five years ago.

THT launch gay drug alcohol support
12:00 AM — The Terrence Higgins Trust has launched a new drug and alcohol support service for young lesbian, gay and bi-sexual (LGB) people in Lambeth. The scheme, called High NRG, is being run in Waterloo and will support under 25's who need advice and information on drugs and alcohol.The service offers one to one counselling and group work and is funded by Lambeth Council's Young People's Substance Misuse Grant.

12:00 AM — The Department of Trade and Industry is to start asking about sexual orientation as part of an attempt to count the number of gay people in Britain.According to reports in The Economist, people may be asked about their sexuality when they register at a doctors surgery or fill in a crime survey, and a sexuality section may appear on the 2011 census.

12:00 AM — The Bishop of Lichfield has expressed concern at plans for a gay and bisexual church serviceAccording to the BBC, he said he wished an event publicised in the diocese newspaper to devise services for gay and bisexual people was not happening. The newspaper said the Lichfield branch of Changing Attitude, who campaign for lesbian and gay affirmation in the Anglican Church, is holding an event called Liturgies for Love.

Couple plan gay rights protest
12:00 AM — A gay couple in North Carolina are refusing to pay their taxes in protest at not being allowed to get married.Charles Merrill and his partner Kevin Boyle, have announced they will not pay Federal or North Carolina Income Tax on over two million dollars worth of stock sales and income for 2004, because of unfair discrimination in the Federal and State Tax Income Codes.
Canada may backtrack on gay marriages
12:00 AM — Gay people in Canada may have the right to marry taken away just a year after the nation granted it.A new Conservative government, that campaigned on the promise that it would allow Parliament to vote on whether to reopen the issue, takes power next week .If Parliament approves the motion, the government, led by Stephen Harper, would then change the definition of marriage back to that of a union between a man and a woman. The gay marriage law was brought in by the outgoing Liberals.

Gay Pride knifeman jailed
12:00 AM — An Ultra-Orthodox Jewish man who stabbed people at the Jerusalem Gay Pride Parade last year, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.Judges ruled that the accused displayed extreme fanatical behaviour in his actions that injured three people.The Jerusalem District Court convicted Yishai Schlissel, a resident of the ultra-Orthodox community of Kiryat Sefer, of attempted murder and severe injury for stabbing and injuring three people at the gay parade.

12:00 AM — The widow of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr, died on Monday night in Mexico, where she was receiving treatment at a holistic health centre after a heart attack last year.Coretta Scott King, 78, suffered a stroke and a mild heart attack last August. Her sister Edythe Scott Bagley told CNN she was receiving further medical treatment as part of her rehabilitation at Hospital Santa Monica when she died.

Signatures on anti-gay marriage petition were fakes- gay rights group claims
12:00 AM — More than 2000 voter signatures appeared illegitimately on the initiative petition to ban gay marriage, the gay rights organization MassEquality claimed today. It is to call on the Massachusetts Attorney General and Secretary of State to fully investigate the signature collection activities of VoteonMarriage, an offshoot of the Massachusetts Family Institute.MassEquality says that its own investigations have uncovered more than 2000 voters whose signatures were collected through fraud, deception, forgery and trickery during the signature drive which ended Dec. 7, 2005.
Men appear in court over gay murder
12:00 AM — Two men appeared in court on today charged with murdering the gay bar manager, Jody Dobrowski, on Clapham Common last year.Unemployed Thomas Pickford and decorator Scott Walker denied murdering the 24 year old last October.Mr Pickford, 25, and Mr Walker, 33, who appeared at the Old Bailey by video link were remanded in custody. Their trial will begin on June 12th 2006.

Washington state passes gay rights bill 1
12:00 AM — The Washington state Senate passed a bill today protecting gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people from discrimination, making Washington the 17th state to ban discrimination based on sexual orientation and the 7th state based on gender identity. It now goes before Governor Christine Gregoire, who pledged to sign it."States like Washington are picking up the slack as fairness remains stalled in Congress," said Human Rights Campaign President Joe Solmonese.
700 gay weddings in London since December
12:00 AM — 700 gay couples from London have tied the knot in civil partnerships since the introduction of civil partnerships during December of last year.A further 500 London couples are expected to hold gay weddings over February.The City of Westminster appears to be the most popular with couples with 38 weddings having already taken place with a futher 230 expected over the next few months.
