21 March 2006Battle in Conneticut court over gay marriage rights + Eight same sex couples are suing the Department of Public Health in New Haven Connecticut after they were denied marriage licenses in 2004.Backed by an LGTB advocacy group, Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), the couples will argue that the refusal to grant marriage licenses to same sex couples violates the Constitution's guarantees of liberty and equality for all of the state's citizens. -
21 March 2006Councillor expresses concerns about discrimination law opt outs + Simon Williams, the Green Party councillor for Brighton, voiced his concerns today over the government's soon to be implemented anti discrimination legislation.New rules expected to come in in October 2006 will make it illegal for lesbian or gay customers to be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. Hotels, insurance providers and house sellers or landlords will all be targeted by the policy, which Mr Williams described as "welcome". So why the concern? -

21 March 2006Equality review highlights issue of homophobic bullying 4 Trevor Phillips, chair of the government's independent Equalities Review, spoke out about the problems of homophobic bullying in a consultation report published today."We need to focus our efforts to ensure that all of those who are disadvantaged in some way are given the opportunity to reach their full potential and contribute to a vibrant and successful UK economy," said Mr Phillips. The social cost and lost earnings are thought to cost billions of pounds a year. -
21 March 2006Bishop speaks out against gay adoption + San Franciscan Archbishop George Niederauer has only been in office a month but he's making his presence felt with an anti gay adoption approach.He wants the social services arm of the Archdiocese of San Francisco to bring it's adoption programme "fully in sync" with the church's views while continuing to find homes for hard-to-place children, according to spokesman Maurice Healy. -
21 March 2006Council and Clergy gay marriage mix up + When The Rev Philip Millen of Randalstown Free Presbyterian Church wrote a letter to Anrtim Borough Council objecting to civil partnerships, he was horrified to see it photocopied on the back of civil partnership application forms.A "clerical error" was blamed for the mix up, but that doesn't stop Mr Millen hinting darkly that "there may be ulterior motives at work".
