6 March 2007Italian government split on gay partnership law 4 The Italian government stands divided over a bill which would give inheritance and healthcare rights to gay couples.The centre-left coalition government covers a variety of views on the subject, many of which are swayed by the country's staunch Catholicism.One opponent of the bill is senator Paola Binetti, a member of the conservative Catholic group Opus Dei. -

28 February 2007Lithuanian MPs think homosexuality a perversion 4 A poll of members of the Lithuanian parliament has revealed that over half of them agree that homosexuality is a perversion.The survey reflected a deeply ingrained homophobia in Lithuanian society. Homosexual sex was legalised in Lithuania in 1993.In 2004 the age of consent for homosexual sex was lowered from 18 to 14 to bring it in line with the age of consent for heterosexual sex. -
27 February 2007NHS pulls funding on gay smoking cessation + Gay men are set to lose one of the most successful quit smoking courses in the country after it has been denied funding by London's NHS trusts.March 14 will be National No Smoking Day, yet thousands of gay men may be unable to get the help they need to quit because the Gay Men Fighting Aids course is under threat.GMFA, the UK's only charity dedicated to gay men's health, runs a stopping smoking that boasts a 68% success rate. -
27 February 2007Channel 4 podcast for gay education week 9 Gay rapper QBoy will be introducing two podcasts for Channel 4 that offer support and advice to gay teenagers.The podcasts, which are part of Channel 4's gay teen Sexuality Awareness week, will focus on the issues of coming out.The first will discuss the family, comparing the motivations and experiences of three young teens coming out to their families. -
27 February 2007The case of a lesbian adoption and the IBM fortune + When Olive Watson and Patricia Spado discovered they could not legally marry in Maine in 1991, they decided to take a less conventional route to cement their rights.Ms Watson adopted Ms Spado, naming her as the sole beneficiary of her will and cementing her rights of inheritance.The couple split in 1992, but Ms Spado is claiming her share of inheritance as an official "grandchild" of Ms Watson's family. -

20 February 2007Glad To Be Gay singer marks history month + BBC Radio 6 presenter Tom Robinson will be speaking at the University of Manchester on Friday as part of a national celebration of gay history.Robinson is expected to talk about his years as a musician and gay activist as part of LGBT History Month.The overtly political Robinson Band had a hit with (Sing if you're) Glad to be Gay in 1977. -

20 February 2007Gender surgery in Hounslow saved from axe + Plans to remove funding for sex change operations by Hounslow primary care trust have been abandoned after protests from a charity representing British transsexuals.The PCT planned to scrap funding on the grounds that the operations are "non-essential." In comparison, other operations denied funding on the same grounds included tattoo removals and stomach stapling.The Gender Trust, a charity which supports transgender people, slammed the PCT on their website -
20 February 2007Transsexual MP stands down + Georgina Beyer, the first transsexual MP to be elected in New Zealand, has retired from her post.Beyer is also a Maori, and so a minority in more ways than one. Over the past seven years she has made history for transgender people.Not only was she the first transsexual in the world to be elected to national office, she was also the first transsexual in the world to be elected as a mayor. -

13 February 2007THT target East End girls and boys + Rising rates of sexually transmitted diseases among young people, gay and straight, have prompted the establishment of a new young people's sexual health service in South Islington.It is run by the Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK's leading HIV and sexual health charity, and the City YMCA.The service offers testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), advice on contraception, and managing relationships to 16 to 24-year-olds. -
13 February 2007Gay tourists turned off by sexy advertising + Recently gay holidaymakers have been lured to Britain using posters of half-dressed men, Kylie Minogue and drag queens.But now VisitBritain, the country's official tourism agency, is having to tone down its advertising approach.Research using focus groups in the USA, France and Germany found that potential visitors were being turned off by its cheesy, stereotypical and overtly sexual campaigns, the Daily Telegraph reports. -
13 February 2007Wife Swap want gay or lesbian family + Controversial television series Wife Swap is looking for their first same-sex family to take part in the eighth series.The BAFTA-winning Channel 4 programme, which first aired in 2003, takes two families, usually with vastly different lifestyles.The families swap wives for two weeks. In the first week the women try to fill their counterpart's role, and in the second week they impose their own routine on their hosts.
