‘I am a gay American, and I am a second-class citizen’
Members of the Bloomington Gay Recruiters group conduct a marriage equality sit-in on Thursday morning outside the Monroe County Justice Building. Along with signs, the group also chanted “1,138 federal rights denied. I am a gay American and I am a second-class citizen.”
Honoring the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots in New York City on June 28, 1969, Bloomington residents Lillie Aydt and her group Gay Recruiters led Bloomington’s first-ever sit-in for marriage equality Thursday at the Monroe County Justice Building downtown. The Stonewall riots occurred when members of the LGBT community in Greenwich Village at the Stonewall Inn fought back against the
oppression they faced from various government-sponsored systems.
Gay Recruiters was formed in response to the Proposition 8 Supreme Court decision, which upheld the illegality of same-sex marriage in California and thus established what Aydt called “an Orwellian precedent, allowing certain gay citizens more rights than others.” See ‘I am a gay American, and I am a second-class citizen’

Excruciating Wait For Prop 8 Ruling
(San Francisco, California) For thousands of same-sex couples the wait for the California Supreme Court to issue its long awaited ruling on the constitutionality of Proposition 8 is excruciating.
Several dozen couples turned up at the court Thursday morning after the blogosphere erupted with rumors and speculation the decision would be …

Elisabeth Hasselbeck disowned “Joe The Plumber” Thursday morning on “The View.”
Hasselbeck, who campaigned on the trail with Sarah Palin in October, took Joe the Plumber to task for his recent comments that “queers” aren’t welcome around his children.
“I think this is an ignoramus statement,” Hasselbeck said. “In that specified corner to which he had a life during this election, I was even a person who thought, you know what, power to Joe the Plumber at that point. Well, Joe the Plumber is not invited anywhere around me. “
Joy Behar promptly screamed, “Turning! Turning! Turning!” implying that Hasselbeck, a stalwart Republican, was turning into a Democrat.

Cleveland partner registry opens
(Cleveland, Ohio) Same-sex couples began lining up early at city hall Thursday morning to sign up under Cleveland’s new domestic partner registry.
Outside city hall, there was an air of excitement; inside a group of conservative pastors held a prayer service using the National Day of Prayer to denounce gay unions.

(New York City) As expected, New York Gov. David Paterson (D) unveiled legislation Thursday morning to allow same-sex couples to marry in the Empire State.

ALBANY — Gov. David A. Paterson has been saying that a bill legalizing same-sex marriage should come to a vote in the State Senate even if the measure does not have enough support to pass.
But is this really a good thing for gay rights advocates, a constituency that Mr. Paterson has solidly supported for most of his political career?
Mr. Paterson’s logic, which he explained in separate radio interviews on Thursday morning, is that the public deserves to see where their elected officials stand on an issue as sensitive as same-sex marriage. The bill should be debated on the Senate floor, senators should be forced to take a public position on it, and they should vote it up or down, he said.
“I’m going to put the bill out and just let people fight it out,” Mr. Paterson said in an appearance on the Buffalo station WGR-AM (550). “I would like to see the Legislature just debate the bills that people think are controversial.”
In an earlier appearance on WHAM-AM (1180), Mr. Paterson did not seem concerned that the bill could lose. “If it loses, it loses,” he said. “And let the parties on both sides have their say.”

Prosecution Winding Down in Gay Porn Murder Trial
More than 50 witnesses have been called so far in a high profile murder case in Luzerne County. The witnesses were testifying against Harlow Cuadra. He’s charged with stabbing Bryan Kocis to death in Dallas Township in 2007.
The prosecution called witnesses Thursday to help prove Cuadra had the strength to stab and kill Bryan Kocis. Cuadra’s attorneys have painted him as weaker than his boyfriend, admitted killer Joseph Kerekes, and said in opening statements that Cuadra wasn’t strong enough to stab Kocis and slash his throat.
Lance Threadway owns the Virginia Beach gym where Cuadra and his partner, Joseph Kerekes, worked out. He testified Thursday morning, saying Cuadra was strong for his size, and that both men lifted equal weights. See Prosecution Winding Down in Gay Porn Murder Trial
