When asked, this gay soldier told

TUSTIN In a calm corner of his garage, a soldier rummages through reminders of the of his life. . A Middle . An . Only a few of the souvenirs in Dan Choi’s will fit into his travel duffel.

As he packs, his walks in. She reaches around her son’s boulder-sized for a hug.

“I’m not sure.”

By , though, Choi will surely be gone. He’s getting out of Tustin, maybe for good.

has unsettled the 28-year-old combat and his family. In March, on national , he said, “I am .”

That was news to a of , including his bosses. And, the three short words thrust Choi into the limelight, booked his calendar with equal-rights – and earned him a slip from the military.

But all the cameras and microphones that have trailed Choi since then have captured only part of the story. They haven’t been privy to his ’ distress, his past or his of liberation.

Thousands of other troops have gotten booted for outing themselves (or being outed) as or . But, like clockwork, most have disappeared from public view. Choi figures he will too at some point.

But he’s not going away now, and he’s not going away quietly.

LOWS

Over loudspeakers, he ranted.

It was 1998, and Clinton was getting grilled by national media for his then-alleged affair with a 22-year-old intern. At Tustin , Choi, 17, took on the role of Clinton scold. He locked himself in a room and commandeered the public system to decry the commander-in-chief’s weakness and offer what he saw as a cure-all: in Christ.

Choi’s sister, Grace, then a , her ’s as “surprising, but not embarrassing.”

Their , a who fought in the , helped raise his to battle against and . Years later, that duty to speak out would inspire Choi to talk about his – and throw a crimp in their father-son .

“I always think of the story of a of telling Christ to his disciples,” Choi says, adding: “And Christ said, ‘… if they keep quiet, the rocks will cry out.’”

But, in at least, Choi’s bold talk came with a cost. The acne-faced student body his as morning news announcer, and was forced into a sabbatical from student government.

Graduation cleaned his . Reinstated as , the straight-A student gave a parting to his . And, for the U.S. at , Choi left a rousing, two-page letter in the back of his own yearbook.

“Leave your kingdom,” he wrote to himself, “to be a lonely plebe down in the dump.”

STANDING UP

In a forest near the academy, Choi smeared earth-tone paint on his and hunkered down with his rifle. Energy-sapping practice , he says, were key to his college experience.

On campus, Choi studied environmental engineering. Critically, he also began mastering Arabic.

And he held onto his . He studies in the dorms and recited the “Cadet ” every Sunday with the choir. “Make us to choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong,” he prayed, “and to never to be content with a half when the whole can be won.”

Still, Choi concealed a . Since fourth grade, he had begged to take away his attraction to other males. In college, he says, he remained unwilling to “explore” his .

In 2003, the War kicked into gear. Choi, now clear-faced and brawny, was soon sent to serve in the Persian Gulf.

There, he says he “greased hands” with elder Sheikhs, patrolled the Triangle of Death and designed a reverse-osmosis water plant for . He also passed on his knowledge of Arabic, as a teacher to thousands of American troops.

Throughout it all, compelled by the military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy, Choi kept mum about his sexual .

His final wartime task, delivering backpacks full of cash to contractors, kept him awake at night. It was around the time of that mission, sleepless in the desert, that he started asking a tough question:

Do I really want to keep lying?

When his tour ended, he wanted to boomerang back to . But that dream was brought to a halt in March when, on behalf of scores of alumni and active-duty servicemembers, he went public with his .

WAR IN PEACE

On his last afternoon in town, rice steams in the kitchen as, upstairs, Choi sorts through a box of accolades.

“Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll be one of those stodgy old veterans wearing all his stuff,” he says, laughing, clutching a of medals.

Proud but tired of the half-, the highly decorated soldier returned from in 2008 and ditched reenlistment. Instead, he became a leader in the . Stationed in New York, he someone, parked down the street and lived in his car to be close to his first boyfriend.

Then Choi came home to Tustin to come out to his and – 19 times in fact, to show he wasn’t bluffing. He handed his a copy of the book “Loving Someone .” A later he discovered it unopened on the floor of his closet.

“They don’t accept it,” Choi says. “And I don’t think they will anytime soon.”

Neither will the military. After his first of several TV appearances, Choi, the rare Arabic-speaking serviceman, received an ultimatum from his employer – accept discharge or stand trial.

His chances before a judge seem slim, based on the dismissal of 12,500 past soldiers.

But he believes the fortunes of an estimated 65,000 and of the armed forced could be changed if were to repeal “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” a move favors. So, Choi keeps talking to news and shouting to , which his home life – and, recently, compelled him to pack up and move.

Eve Pearlman: Curriculum battle lines drawn over values vs. bigotry in Alameda

A TOPIC AROUND TOWN the last several months has been ’s proposed anti- , which has been discussed with increasing , and has turned into a on rights. I admit I’d only been paying half attention to the (though my husband has been actively advocating for the ’s ), until when I watched hours of at the meeting, my dropping as a long line of voiced their to a few short lessons acknowledging the of and families.

“It’s about !” the claimed. But teaching about same-gender families is no more about than the words “” and “husband” and “wife” and “wedding” are about . Yes, is based in part on a sexual commitment, but we speak about all the time in a way in which is not the . To children, the word is no more about than the word is.

“But I want to teach my child about these things,” said. “I want to teach my beliefs to my child.” I have strong for who want to impart their values to their children. But I do not have when that “value” is that someone else is a lesser person. Imagine if the “value” in question were that women should not own property or that could be owned by other or that with certain should not be allowed to . These are not “values,” these are discriminatory .

At Tuesday’s meeting, the technique of the well-organized and coordinated was to attack the series of lessons — designed to complement an already-established anti- — on a number of technical grounds. “It’s not legal,” they said. “It doesn’t go far enough” or “It one group over another.”

But these attacks were contrived and disingenuous. Most operated from what only few more frankly admitted: They don’t think families are the moral equivalent of their own straight families. They don’t think families are “OK” and they don’t want their kids being taught that they are.

As many in this have done, all you have to do is switch the ’ arguments to another social group to see how undemocratic their are. Would the district allow a student to opt out of a Black ? A of Chinese ? To leave the room any time is discussed?

Of course not.

has been used to support all sorts of atrocities past and present (as well as all sorts of good things). Because an argument is -based doesn’t mean that it is more right, more valid or more just. In this country, in this democracy, in this friendly city of 70,000, it is our shared value that all are created equal — and to those who want to teach otherwise, well, this is not a “value.” It is . And it has no place in our community’s schools.

It has surprised me that in this day and age, in the Bay Area, that some are so hostile to difference and so obsessed with other ’s lives. The aim of the Alameda school district is simple: to teach about reality in order to help children skillfully and respectfully navigate their diverse community. All families (the majority of families, in fact) don’t look like the Cleavers. Families have all sorts of configurations, incorporating and cousins, step- and stepfathers, same gender and opposite gender . That is reality. Children should be taught what’s real.

Deb Price: More Republicans embrace gay equality

of change are beginning to be heard from deep inside the Party.

The Log Cabin ’ recent national convention offered a tantalizing peek at a possible not-so- when the Party has finally — and firmly — turned the corner and embraced for Americans.

Marquee were , former senior campaign for 2008 , and former New . , a founder of the moderate Council.

Representing the youth that will determine the ’s was Meghan , 24-year-old daughter of Sen. and a contributor at TheDailyBeast.com.

Each supports for same- .

That puts them firmly in the minority of today’s , but definitely not of future if the party is to grow, appeal to , and be competitive beyond the south.

“We were crushed by the campaign with voters under 30,” Schmidt pointed out.

What distinguishes the youth , he continued, is “a greater acceptance of who find in with of the same .” One day, a majority of Americans will follow, and, he added, “sooner or later the Party will catch up.”

Whitman, tackling the problem of broadening the party without scaring away social , said, “It’s not about saying to the Christian , ‘There is no place for you.’ It’s about saying, ‘Would you please stop saying there’s no place for us?’”

Afterward, Whitman told me, “It’s not going to threaten my to have a couple marry.” She wants the issue out of the party platform.

Meghan was blunter: “’ using and isn’t going to miraculously make think we’re cool again. Breaking free from obsolete positions and providing real solutions that don’t divide our nation further will.”

It’d be easy to dismiss the trio of as preaching to choir, but encouraging are coming from elsewhere as well:

point with to the fact that eight in the Legislature helped override the governor’s of .

Meanwhile, Iowans are set to begin marrying on Monday, thanks to a ruling written by a . A University of Iowa Hawkeye conducted just before the 3 unanimous Iowa ruling for found that 58 percent of Iowans aged 18 to 29 favor , 17 percent prefer civil , and only 16 percent oppose both.

That means fewer than one out of five favors the official position.

Contrast that with Iowans 65 or older: 18 percent favor , 31 percent civil and 42 percent neither.

If you were a company that hopes to still be around in 20 years, which customers would you appeal to?

That question is being asked in elite circles. In a of its political insiders, National Journal magazine found in its most recent issue that only 50 percent think their party should oppose , while 8 percent think the party should embrace it and 37 percent say it should steer clear of the issue.

Speaking freely behind the cloak of , one said, “Perception of complete to all rights is killing the among voters under 29. Evolve or perish, .”

A growing number of thinkers are concluding that their party’s future hinges on finding a way to comfortably embrace rights.

Homophobic conference to promote gay “cure”.

– ‘Anglican ‘- to promote and&;dangerous&; “cure”.

his weekend in (UK) The Anglican Mainstream Organisation are holding a mongering anti conference called &; the City. The Anglican are the first organisation of the week to be awarded the title for their conference where will the use of Reparative Therapy which aims to “cure” of .

For anyone who has seen the film But I’m A Cheerleader (about a girl whose send her away to the Camp in order to cure her of her lesbianity) the conference reads like a sick .

The - Christian conference claims to be: “Ideal for , rabbis, psychologists, therapists, educators and others concerned about the of confronting us in today’s society, including mentoring the sexually broken, the of culture, pornography, the and , and , the family and .&; There will be a special on how and / can respond biblically and pastorally to those struggling with unwanted (same- attraction).”

The organisers of the event are determined to whip up about and portray life as a which is . The Anglican feel that the UK is “capitulating” to the .

They also seem disgruntled with the progressive brought into protect LGBTs and are a living, breathing example of why such protective needs to be in place. They say: “Given the present cultural endorsement and legal protection of these ‘’, we will soon be in a situation where there is no turning back: the damage will be complete.”

The Anglican promote Affect Focused Therapy (AFT) and Reparative Therapy as the way forward in “curing” ; who they prefer to call the “sexually broken” or “sufferers”.

They say: “AFT is transferable across the board to all sorts of deeply-ingrained patterns of dysfunctionality, , brokenness and pain.”

Reparative Therapy is a dangerous practise which seeks to change , and views as a mental disorder.

Joseph Nicolisi a leading proponent of Repartive Therapy and author of “, and the Practical Work of Reparative Therapy” will be speaking at the confererence. The Anglican say: “Joe has a proven track record over almost 30 years in helping the world.”

The American have stated that “scientific evidence does not show that conversion (Reparative) therapy works and it could do more harm than good. Changing one’s is not simply a matter of changing ones behaviour. It would require altering ones emotional, romantic and sexual and restructuring ones self concept and social identity.”

News of this conference is particulary worrying especially after the recent report from The University College and St. Georges University , which suggested that many UK professionals had attempted to change their client’s .

The Anglican feel that Reparative Therapy “needs to be far better known”.

However, the Lesbian and Gay Foundation urge gay, lesbian and bisexual people to access Gay Affirmative counselling services and therapy.

At the core of Affirmative Therapy (GAT)&;is the there is nothing inherently wrong or bad with being . Instead your counsellor will affirm your rather than trying to convince you to alter or change it. The Pink Therapy website is an excellent resource for questions to ask potential counsellors.

A for the and Foundation said: “It is worrying to hear of this conference aimed at promoting such a deplorable and dangerous approach to therapy, and giving a platform to ideas. We encourage to access Affirmative Therapy, rather than internalise the beliefs of others.”

Stand Up to : Should a conference which promotes and a harmful approach to therapy be allowed to take place in the UK? The Anglican have not disclosed the location of the conference on their website, but it has been reported that the anti conference will take place at a Christian run conference centre called the Emmanuel Centre&; (9-23 Marsham Street, SW1P 3DW) in the City of Westminster on 24/25th.
