Church ponders next step on gay vows

in and Iowa, the only parts of the nation where same- is legal, are preparing for a wave of requests to allow to oversee the ceremonies as the result of a decision last week by the that opens the door to church for .

Do Obama and Miss California Have the Same Position on Gay Marriage? Sort of.

I was at a, err, opposite- wedding

over the weekend when one of the guests asked me, presumably as the member of the on hand, why , , gets lambasted for being anti- , while Barack Obama

, the of the , gets a free pass while having essentially the same position.

The answer lies in tone and .

It is true that Obama’s position is that is “between a man and a ” and that he is “not in favor of .” That said, he articulately for the rights of gay couples on things like . See here, for example, starting at about 1:06: “When I down and read and I think how would feel about somebody not being able to visit someone they when they’re sick, I conclude that that is something that’s important.”

And it is possible that some portion of suspect that would favor were it a politically viable position: He’s secretly with us, not like that Miss California. And even if that’s not the case, he’s good on enough other stuff that he can get a pass on this.

’s has reported that Miss California, a Christian college student named Carrie Prejean, had a boob job paid for by the Miss California Competition. Talk about performance enhancing additives! And we thought she was such a good, church going gal.

In a move reminiscent of beauty ’s crusade against rights, has joined in a against this week. Her move upset rights , including a head of the pageant.

In the , another beauty named , a former , became a voice against after leading a campaign to repeal a Miami-area rights ordinance. She was famously quoted as saying, “If are granted rights, next we’ll have to give rights to prostitutes and to who sleep with St. Bernards and to nail-biters.”

Keith Lewis, the co- of the pageant, said was attended to by before the Miss contest, and that he always knew her to be friendly to like himself.

But Lewis said he was disappointed with her stance against same-sex weddings, and that while she keeps her crown as Miss California, she is speaking for herself on gay marriage.

Maybe it is time to take away her “crown?”
