Thursday’s Watercooler: Oprah goes primetime and Lady Gaga stands up for gay teens
Today, gay kids continue to make waves across the country. I’m hoping it’s a trend, that Constance has inspired a national uprising amongst gay teens. It’s about time someone challenged the strangle hold administrators have over high school students. In today’s story [1], a Nashville teen, Cole Goforth, wore a “Lady Gay Gay” t-shirt and was told to go home and change because the shirt caused “disruptions” at school. Cole refused and Lady Gaga tweeted her support for his assertion of first amendment rights. It’s a good legal fight and I hope Cole takes it all the way. And props to Gaga for lending her support!

In other serious but less sexy news, Obama and Medvedev (Russian President) have signed [3] a small, but significant nuclear disarmament treaty. It’s not going to eliminate the incredibly large nuclear program in the U.S. or that of Russia, but even some sort of deal is progress. Nuclear disarmament has been getting knocked around recently (think North Korea) and it’s heartening to see any movement towards the reduction of these weapons in the world.

While Obama works on serious issues regarding nuclear war, the Republican party falters in a sex scandal. I know it’s not new news today, but this interview between Jon Stewart and disgraced “Steele” is too hilarious. Lesbian bondage…. who knew you would see the Republicans get into that?

While I am more likely to watch Stewart than Oprah, I do catch her at the gym every once in a while and I am excited that her new show will happen [11]at a more reasonable hour. And it will include international travel and celebrities! What more could we ask for? This is definitely better than the episode I saw an ad for about straight couples who no longer have sex. I would much rather watch Oprah and Brad Pitt go to Egypt. Wouldn’t you?

In a final piece of shocking news, a Wisconsin district attorney is arguing [13]that sex ed teachers who teach teenagers about condom use and contraception when they know or ought to know those teenagers are having sex with other underage individuals could be criminally charged. It’s a complete perversion of the law and a scare tactic obviously aimed at removing proper sex ed from classrooms. What is most troubling is that this DA is in a position of power when it comes to criminal sanctions in the state and he is so obviously highly conservative. Should we really have ideologues like this in offices that hold power over the population’s very basic freedoms?

Withers: Top 10 gay anti-gay politicians
You know it’s bad when Mark Foley [1] and Ted Haggard [2] can’t even be in the top five. For a little humor go examine the top 10 list of anti-gay politicians caught doing the gay. [3]
They are all there, from Larry Craig [4] and his bathroom antics to good ol’ Roy Ashburn [5], who voted against rights for gays and immigrants but was enthralled with Latino male tail (who isn’t?). Some of these guys are really low-down dirty dogs. There is Richard Curtis [6], a Washington State representative who voted consistently against domestic partnerships and discrimination laws. How did his sodomy loving ways come out? He hired an escort (no problem there), but reneged on the agreed upon price. Really Curtis? That’s so not classy and rather cheap. Glad the working lad had pictures of you in sexy red negligee.
Then there is creepy Bruce Barclay [7], although his creepy nature saved him from living as a guest of the state. He and a young guy had some booty time. The young thing called it rape. The authorities were called in. Mr. Barclay had many videotapes preserving his sexual conquests, filmed without the consent of his fellow actors. The tape didn’t show rape; however, if you meet this guy in bar and want to give him shot, take him to your place.

Well, it was only a matter of time, wasn’t it? According to authorities, one of our own social conservative Republicans has been caught cheating on his wife, and he was doing it with a young legislative intern. At this juncture, we’re going to resist the temptation to make a joke about family values. That’s getting so old it’s not funny anymore.
Suffice it to say that like John Ensign, Mark Sanford and all the rest on the national stage lately, this one is really rich–with a little homemade porn and a bumbling blackmailer tossed into the story to make it even spicier. Ensnared in Tennessee’s own sex scandal tonight is Sen. Paul Stanley, the wingnut from Germantown who has crusaded to ban gay adoption of children and who once made the really stupid mistake of saying: “When you’re married, there’s a commitment there.”
According to court documents, here’s what happened: Stanley, who is married with two children, was having an affair with his 22-year-old legislative intern, McKensie Morrison. Morrison’s boyfriend, Joel Palmer Watts. 28, discovered a computer memory disc with sexually explicit photographs of Morrison that appeared to have been taken in Stanley’s apartment. Watts then blackmailed Stanley, demanding $10,000 in return for keeping quiet about the senator’s relationship with his intern.

Gay mayor’s illicit love is talk of conservative Texas
The small Texan city of San Angelo has been turned upside down by one of the most unusual sex scandals ever to impact on American political life.
Joseph Lown, the popular mayor, suddenly resigned last week after revealing he had fallen madly in love with an illegal immigrant. That was the first revelation; the second was that his new partner was another man.
Not surprisingly the news has become the talk of Texas. In the socially conservative and solidly Republican state, gay marriage and illegal immigration are probably the two hottest potatoes in town.
Perhaps, then, it was no wonder that Lown announced the end of his career from Mexico, where he had fled with his new boyfriend and from where he could mourn the end of an otherwise successful political career.
The news came as a bombshell. Lown, 32, had just won a fourth term with 89 per cent of the vote. He was immensely popular after having worked long hours to fix the city’s infrastructure and attending hundreds of community meetings.

Disgraced pastor speaks at Charlotte church
CHARLOTTE – Disgraced evangelist Ted Haggard spoke to a Charlotte congregation Sunday morning.
Haggard was the pastor of the 12,000-member New Life Church in Colorado Springs and the Head of the National Association of Evangelicals until a gay sex scandal in November 2006 led to his downfall.
He spoke Sunday morning to the Elevation Church as part of a series entitled “Healer.” Haggard apologized to the audience and shared details about the conflict and confusion he struggles.
“I am so sorry that I caused pain in your family,” Haggard said. “I am so ashamed that I misrepresented the body of Christ.”
In November 2006, a male prostitute claimed Haggard paid him for sex for three years and that Haggard used crystal meth. Haggard denies the drug allegations.

(Denver) Disgraced pastor Ted Haggard says he wanted his wife to divorce him after a sex scandal involving another man, but she refused.

Police in Swedish gay sex party scandal
Partying police officers who simulated homosexual acts and ordered a male stripper are being investigated by Swedish authorities.
The nine male officers, who partied in a remote cabin, took pictures of themselves naked and posing with sub machine guns and attempted to play a ‘dramatised’ gay sex game.
But sadly for the male stripper, who had just turned up, the party was busted by senior instructors who sent everyone home.

Ted Haggard, Oprah Interview: Haggard And Wife Discuss Gay Sex Scandal (VIDEO)
Disgraced Pastor ted Haggard’s fall from grace was swift and devastating. Once one of America’s most influential religious figures, he all but disappeared from the public square when it was revealed that he had been engaging in sexual relations with a male escort and was paying him to score crystal meth.
Since his downfall Haggard has made a couple forays back into public life, like when he claimed to have undergone intensive “restoration” which made him into a “complete heterosexual” (which was then disputed by the new pastor of Haggard’s church, who said Haggard quit the program early and was not yet completely “restored”). However, he is now on a promotional blitz for his new HBO documentary, “The Trials of Ted Haggard,” made by Alexandra Pelosi, daughter of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.
Haggard, along with his wife Gayle, took to the Oprah Winfrey show today to promote the documentary and discuss his life-long struggle with his attraction to men. He also addresses new allegations that he had a cash-for-sex relationship with a young, male church volunteer for over three years.
