Creative Society Theater Company: A Male Mencius’s Mother Educate His Son and Moves House Three Times

“He is my Wife, He is my Mother”
Li Yu, the talented and pioneering writer in the 17th Century created this social realistic “Silent Opera” with his avant-garde ideology and audacious writing style. A Male Mencius’s Mother Educate His Son and Moves House Three Times depicted a genuine homosexual love affair. For this work, Li Yu choose to write in the style called Nihuaben, which means the works that was written in spoken language and structured as a novel. Even in the 21st Century, when homosexual relationship is no longer a taboo, this love affair spectacle can still overwhelm your mind for sure.
Katherine Hui-ling Chou, the playwright and director of Creative Society has been focusing on the gender and sexuality topics for a long time. For this production, she selected one of the short stories from the once dispersed collection of Li Yu and staged with subtle cross-casting choice to display this romance between the young beauties. It is a homosexual affair that covered by the illusion of the heterosexual love, the mother-son relationship that turns out to be the father-son connection and the false marriage between sister and brother. This heterosexual and homosexual ensemble in the 17th century can help viewers to re-discover the queer genealogy in the Chinese society.
From May 14 to 17, Creative Society Theater Company will present their 18th production, He is my Wife, He is my Mother at the Metropolitan Hall. This production assembled the best-welcomed theatre actors, Yen-ling Hsu and Hua-chien Hsu, the prominent performers, Shou-yuo Liu, Yi-hsiu Lee and Wei-wei Wu with the theater new blood, Ting-yi Chu and Alan Yang to bring audience this unique piece. Economist: Is Outing Of Closeted Political Figures A Useful Tactic?

KIRBY DICK’S documentary “Outrage“, which opened nationally last week, has turned gay activists’ controversial tactic of exposing closeted public figures—in this case, closeted Republicans perceived as advancing anti-gay policies in their public lives—into a feature-length film. The movie targets an array of elected officials and prominent GOP operators, but of particular interest is its focus on Charlie Crist (pictured with wife), the governor of Florida, who has thrown his hat into the 2010 race for the US Senate, with the support of much of the party establishment.

As if to confirm the film’s thesis that the press go out of their way to help preserve this sort of charade, National Public Radio opted to edit their reviewer’s piece on the movie to remove the names of politicos identified as closeted. At this point, as several others note, this seems rather quaint—and indeed, like an endorsement of the notion that there’s something especially awful about being accused of being gay. Nor do the network’s protestations that they simply avoid traffic in gossip and rumour hold up: They are only too happy to pass along unconfirmed reports about the sex lives of entertainers.

Which is odd, when you think about it, since while the public is clearly interested in the romances of musicians and movie stars, it’s hard to claim there’s a genuine public interest served by poking into their private lives. When it comes to public servants, however, we generally accept that it’s perfectly legitimate to scrutinise their private conduct to the extent it’s relevant to assessing the sincerity of their professed beliefs or the veracity of their public personas. Usually the controversy over “outing” has to do not with elected officials, but with high-level staffers, who have not volunteered themselves for scrutiny in the same way as political candidates. In practice legislative directors and analysts too yield significant public power—legislators are important people, and can’t be bothered with writing and reading bills themselves—but “Outrage” limits itself to indisputable public figures. If the claims about them are so poorly sourced as to constitute plain slander, the film shouldn’t be rewarded with any kind of attention; if they’re at least credible, one may as well save the listeners a Google search and say what they are.

Exclusive Daily Beast Valentines Poll: The Sex Freeze and the Baby Bust

In a time where consumer confidence, consumer spending and the GDP are all on the decline,  a new poll on sex and romance from The Daily Beast, an operating unit of IAC (NASDAQ:IACI),  found that interest in sex in these difficult times is also on the decline. Furthermore, Americans are less likely to have children and are postponing other major life events such as getting married, moving in with a partner and getting divorced. The complete survey, including all data, is available at thedailybeast.com.

Although nearly half of Americans believe that sex helps take their mind off of problems, only 13% of Americans overall say they will have sex more often this year compared to last.  Income, however, impacts the number of times people are having sex each month as well as their overall romantic relationships.  43% of those earning $75,000 or higher are having sex six or more times a month, compared to only 21% of those earning less than $75,000. Additionally, 58% of those earning over $75,000 feel that the recent financial issues have had no impact on their relationship, compared to only 40% of those making less than $75,000.

FINDINGS FROM VALENTINE’S DAY POLL INCLUDE:
 –  42% of the Americans surveyed are now less likely to have children
 –  More than one in three are less likely to get divorced
 –  In both sex and dating, Americans are being more careful. 41% are more
cautious about who they date and one in five are using more birth
     control to avoid having children

“It’s startling to learn here of the number of people who are postponing having children for financial reasons,” said Tina Brown, co-founder and Editor in Chief of The Daily Beast. “We could be about to see a potential Baby Bust.”
Despite a tough economy, over 60% of Americans, regardless of gender, household income or political party, feel that the bad economic times are going to last two years or less.  Americans remain romantic with 6 out of 10 believing that despite the current economy, romance still exists and the economic crisis focuses us on what’s important – strong relationships and partners.

Political affiliation did, however, impact poll results when it came to financial stability. One in four Americans are looking for someone who can provide financial stability rather than seeking true love, with almost 30% of Democrats surveyed sharing that viewpoint, compared to 21% of Republicans. Republicans and Democrats also vary on the institution of marriage with 76% of Republicans viewing marriage as the eventual purpose of a relationship, compared to only 68% of Democrats.

When asked about the First Couple and whether or not they have a true romance, party affiliations matter with 80% Democrats thinking Barack and Michelle Obama have a true romance, compared to only 48% of Republicans.

With Valentine’s just a few days away, romantic spending is down. The most popular gifts are dinner with two (21%), a card (19%) while an additional 12% are saying “what gifts?, I’m saving money this year.” The floral industry may be impacted with only 4% opting for expensive flowers.

The Daily Beast Valentine’s Day Poll was conducted by Penn, Schoen & Berland Associates (PSB.) The poll covered 1,000 internet interviews from January 30- February 2, 2009. Overall, the margin of error is +/- 3.1%. The sample included 900 interviews with the U.S. population ages 18 and over and an additional 100 interviews with gay men and women aged 18 and over.

Margaret Cho was in a Zoo for GAPA

Gay Asian Pacific Alliance (GAPA) held their 20th anniversary celebration, “Urban Jungle,” at the SF Zoo on Dec. 6, featuring keynote speaker, comic actress Margaret Cho, and some lively singing and dancing. Tita Aida emceed the awards banquet and introduced F.U.S.I.O.N. (Funky Unique Styles In One Nation); GAPA Dance Company performing “Korean Fushion” to Madonna’s Music” and “Fan Dance” to “Please Don’t Stop the Music;” and the GAPA Men’s Chorus singing “My Romance” and several other songs.

“There are many civil rights milestones to be reflected upon,” said Co-chair Francis Tsang. “Forty years ago, Martin Luther King changed history with the Civil Rights Movement; thirty years ago, Harvey Milk changed history with the Gay Rights Movement; and twenty years ago, GAPA changed history for the Asian and Gay Community.” He said the purpose of establishing GAPA was “empowering the Asian and LGBT community, breaking stereotypes and fighting against the status quo, so that we can live our lives out loud and proud.” Co-chair Raphael Buencamino said, “In a time when HIV was devastating our communities, and a time when same-sex marriage was a fantasy, and when gay API people were turned away at bars and clubs, GAPA fought to bring our community out of the shadows to stand up and fight all those forces against us.” He added, “GAPA continues to lead the fight against HIV, especially among the API community at large. Now is the time to fight in courts, stand up, protest, and do what we can to bring change that we have dreamed of.”
