Study: Gays not ‘godless Christian bashers’

This breaking news in from The — a of and habits, particularly of the : folks’ about spirituality aren’t much different from . These and other “surprising insights” were in Barna’s spiritual profile of gays released Monday. In it was a bit of a political heeding for -:

who portray as godless, hedonistic, Christian are not working with the facts,” wrote Monday. “A of cite their as a central facet of their life, consider themselves to be Christian, and claim to have some type of meaningful to Christ active in their .”

“It is interesting to see that most , who have some history within the Christian Church, have rejected orthodox biblical teachings and principles — but, in many cases, to nearly the same degree that the Christian has rejected those same teachings and principles,” Barna said. “Although there are clearly some in the and practices of the straight and , there may be less of a spiritual between straights and than many Americans would assume.”

Now there will be some quibbling with a couple of Barna’s assumptions. Like how Barna pegs the at about 3 percent of the . No, he doesn’t believe in the 1-in-10 stat, but then again, says it’s more like 5 percent, depending how you count.

That aside, the Barnanians found that “out of the 20 -oriented attributes examined in the Barna study, there were just a few in which there were no significant differences between the and .”

Hmm. “No significant differences between the and ”(s)? Does Donald Wildmon know about this?

One big diff, according to the study: “While seven out of every ten (71 percent) have an orthodox, biblical of , just 43 percent of do. In fact, an equal percentage possesses a pantheistic view about deity — i.e., that ‘’ refers to any of a variety of , such as personally achieving a state of higher consciousness or maximized personal potential, or that there are multiple gods that exist, or even that everyone is .”

Another diff: “ were twice as likely as to strongly agree that the is totally accurate in all of the principles it teaches.”

And in the timeliness is next to godliness (OK, and cleanliness) dept: On Monday a crew of organizations supporting same are launching their Get Engaged Tour of California — a pump-priming tour of the state in advance of an expected 2010 campaign expected later this year. We told you about it a while back. leaders will be prominently featured on this tour, as opposed to last year’s anti-Proposition 8 campaign, when they were largely invisible.

“Our -based values require us to our as ourselves,” said Pastor Samuel Chu, of California for . “ and are our and they should be able to enjoy the , and commitment that come with .”

Miss California sparks outrage over gay marriage remarks

Mixing a with is a recipe for . You could make a strong case for it, anyway.

The two merged last night at the site of the Miss pageant in . The result was similar to the after the Miss Teen pageant in 2007 when Miss gave the greatest non-answer answer perhaps in . Both times the non-winner of a pageant got all the attention the next day.

But unlike the pageant two years ago, the contestant in the crossfire didn’t give a nonsensical (and wildly entertaining) answer. The contestant last night, California’s Carrie , was too articulate in the minds of many and to some flaring (similar to Janeane Garofalo’s flare-up on ’s show the other night).

The question posed to the contestant couldn’t be any more incendiary: .

Asked judge to , “ recently became the 4th state to legalize same- . Do you think every state should follow suit. Why or why not?”

quickly learned that in Hilton’s mind there was only one . And picked the wrong one.

“Well I think its great that Americans are able to choose one or the other,” she said. “We live in a land where you can choose same- or opposite . And you know what, in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a should be between a man and a . No offense to anybody out there but that’s how I was raised and that’s how I think it should be between a man and a . Thank you very much.”

was greeted with a mixed reaction from the . followed by applause. And the reactions didn’t stop at the pageant. It went into overtime.

Worst answer

Perez then blasted her on his video calling it the “worst answer in .” He also made comments that he has since apologized for. Now he’s asked her out for coffee to “talk.”

The directors of the pageant condemned her answer on Monday morning.

“As co- of Miss CA and one of the leaders of the Miss CA family, I am personally saddened and hurt that Miss CA 2009 believes rights belong only to a man and a ,” wrote Keith Lewis on Hilton’s . “Although I believe all should be able to ordain what they see fit, I do not believe our government should be able to discriminate against anyone. have no place in in the Miss CA family.”

Sticking by it

Does she regret the answer? Not at all.

“I was raised in a way that you can never your beliefs and your opinions for anything,” she told AccessHollywood.

Further, she informed the site that her sister is a rights in the Air Force. By the way, her sister was more sympathetic than Hilton.

“She was just in my hotel room and she said, ‘Sis, I’m not offended by anything that you said. We have two different opinions and I you because of it. I you because you stood up for what was right, and it’s not a matter of being or not , it’s a matter of you competing for Miss and getting a question and answering it to the best of your ability.”

On one area both Hilton and agree: her answer killed her chances of winning the competition.

“She it because of that question. She was definitely the front-runner before that,” Hilton told ABCNews.com

“It did cost me my crown,” she concurred. “I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I said what I feel. I stated an opinion that was true to myself and that’s all I can do.”
