Hungarian tourist killed gay man with banjo, court told
Wellington - A Hungarian tourist killed a 69-year-old gay man he met in a bar by beating him with a banjo and ramming the handle down his throat, police alleged when his murder trial opened in Auckland on Monday. Ferdinand Ambach, 32, a dive master, pleaded not guilty in the Auckland High Court to murdering Ronald James Brown in December 2007. Prosecutor Nick Williams told the court that Ambach had been in New Zealand a month when the pair met in a bar before going back to Brown’s flat in the Auckland suburb of Onehunga, the New Zealand Herald reported on its website.

Gay Filipino Wins Asylum Case in Historic Decision New America Media
n a possible precedent-setting case, a gay Filipino man was granted political asylum on May 21, 2009 based on his claim that he would suffer persecution in his homeland for being a homosexual. Immigration Judge Loreto Geisse granted the asylum application of Philip Belarmino, a 43-year-old gay man from the Philippines, preventing him from being deported from the United States.
Immigration law experts generally believe that applications for asylum based on gender are nearly impossible to win. Belarmino also had to overcome the one year statutory bar for the filing of asylum applications from the time of entry in the United States as he filed his application more than one year after his arrival.
Belarmino was represented by Ted Laguatan, a certified immigration law specialist who has won major cases against the U.S. government and corporations not only in immigration law but also in civil cases involving millions of dollars.
Belarmino was an English professor in the Philippines for 17 years prior to his arrival in 2005 on a visitor’s visa. He testified that when he was 9 years old and again when he was 11 years old, he was forced to engage in anal and oral sex by older boys. And at age 16, threatened with a knife, a houseboy forced him to do oral and anal sex at various times. He testified that he did not report these incidents to his parents as he did not want them to know he was gay – which would have traumatized them. Durbin Admits To Beating Gay Man
WHEELING — James Durbin 38, told Judge Arthur Recht that he beat a 40-year old gay man in the streets of Wheeling. The victim tells 7 News that he called him a faggot just before the brutal beating that left the victim hospitalized with more than 20 stitches, a broken nose and swollen, blood filled eyes.
Police officers who responded to the beating were prepared to testify that they saw Durbin beating the man. However, Durbin’s attorney said there would be no need for the testimony because his client admits to beating the victim while he was out on bond for domestic violence charges.
Durbin allegedly bit his father’s shoulder and allegedly punched his stepmother earlier this year. Judge Recht says the beating violated his terms of bond and he ordered Durbin held in the Northern Regional Jail without bond on all of the charges against him.
Ohio County Prosecutor Shawn Turak says that if Durbin is found guilty on all of the charges he could face life in prison. Prosecutors can not charge him with a hate crime under West Virginia law.

The first Gay-Straight Alliance student organization at Yuma High School has been approved by the district in what one of the organizers is calling a landmark occasion.
Michael Baughman, founder of the Amancio Project, acted as a go-between for the students, the American Civil Liberties Union of Phoenix and Yuma Union High School District administrators. Baughman said he was just a facilitator who found the smart people to get the job done.
“I specialize in two things: gay rights and rights for the disabled,” Baughman said. “But I put this in their hands. ‘It’s your group. You have to run it your way,’ I told them.”
Baughman launched the Amancio project in May 2005 to keep alive the investigation and expedite solving the murder of Amancio Corrales. A 23-year-old gay man who worked as a female impersonator under the name Dalila, Corrales was found murdered in the Colorado River earlier that month. See Gay-Straight Alliance OK’d for Yuma High
