Gay marriage supporters hand out Valentines

About a dozen gay and lesbian couples came to the Statehouse today to talk about why they think they should be allowed to legally marry in Maine.

And, they handed out Valentines to state lawmakers as they made their way into the morning session.

“Our stories, our lives, our love and our commitment to each other are what is truly at the heart of marriage in Maine,” said Jill Barkley of Portland who spoke with her partner, Diane Hitchcock, at her side. “Being able to legally commit to one another as spouses will secure our life together and provide added protection for our future family.”

The Maine Freedom to Marry Coalition is lobbying legislators to support a bill sponsored by Sen. Dennis Damon, D-Trenton, who is sponsoring a bill to allow gay and lesbian couples to marry in Maine.

Opponents of the measure will gather at St. Paul Center in Augusta from 3-5 p.m. today for a talk called “Ramifications of Genderless Marriage in Maine.” That talk is sponsored by the Maine Coalition of Concerned Families.

Gay marriage supporters vow to file second complaint over Mormon …

The money war over Proposition 8 shows no signs of letting up.

Opponents of the measure, which banned gay marriage in California, said today that they plan to file a second complaint with the state alleging the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints deliberately did not disclose its financial contributions to the Yes on 8 campaign.

Californians Against Hate already filed one complaint with the California Fair Political Practices Commission, sparking an ongoing investigation of whether the church violated campaign finance laws. The church has repeatedly said it did not violate any rules and was not trying to hide how much the church gave.

Records released last month show the church donated about $198,000 to the Yes on 8 case.

“I’m calling this Mormongate,” Fred Karger, founder of Californians Against Hate, told the Associated Press. “I think there’s been a massive coverup.”

Same-sex marriage supporters to petition Scottish Parliament

A group of gay rights advocates has launched a petition to the Scottish Parliament  calling for a change in the law to allow two people of the same sex to get married.

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Network says there is a “ban” on same-sex marriage and that the High Court and the UK Government “have both denied gay couples full equality.”

LGBT Network director Nick Henderson said:

“Equality means all citizens should be treated the same, and that everyone must have the same rights under law.

“Yet the status quo ensures a system of one law for straight couples and another for gay couples.

“Whatever the similarities between civil partnerships and marriage, separate but equal is inherently unequal.

“Marriage is the strongest word we have for a declaration of total love and commitment to one another; and to deny any person that opportunity is to deny the full measure of dignity and humanity that we are all endowed with?”

Gay Marriage Support Helps Politicians Get Re-Elected

A new study concludes that a large majority of legislators who supported gay marriage won re-election nationwide.

Freedom to Marry, the nationwide marriage equality group headed by Evan Wolfson, looked at 1100 state legislators from four states that have voted on gay marriage bills since 2005. Nearly all of these politicians were re-affirmed by their constituents, debunking the misconception that gay marriage support ends political careers.

Lawmakers from both political parties met with equal success.

Calif couples hope ads spur gay marriage support

A group of gay couples in Southern California is planning to put a personal face on the same-sex marriage issue by airing a series of television ads featuring their families.

The five spots are scheduled to run in the days before the Jan. 20 presidential inauguration. They’ll target counties where high numbers voted for Proposition 8, the Nov. 4 ballot initiative that stripped gay couples of the right to wed in California.
