HBO RANKS HIGHEST IN THIRD ANNUAL “GLAAD NETWORK RESPONSIBILITY INDEX”
ABC Leads Broadcast Networks for Third Year in a Row; NBC and CBS Receive “Failing” Grades for Lack of Inclusion of the LGBT Community
Los Angeles, CA, July 27, 2009 – The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) today released its third annual Network Responsibility Index, a report that maps the quantity, quality and diversity of images of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people on television. Primetime programming on the five broadcast networks was evaluated as well as original primetime programming on 10 of the highest-rated cable networks.
HBO scored the highest rating of the 15 networks evaluated with LGBT characters on shows including True Blood, The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency and Entourage that reflect the ethnic and racial diversity of the LGBT community. Of HBO’s 14 original series, 10 included LGBT content and 42 percent of the network’s total programming hours included LGBT representation.
“This year programming was not only inclusive of LGBT people, but networks like HBO are beginning to reflect the broad diversity within our community,” said Rashad Robinson, Senior Director of Media Programs at GLAAD. “With upcoming fall programming and new storylines there is a tremendous opportunity for networks to share the stories of all members of our community including lesbian, bisexual and transgender people as well as LGBT people of color, all groups which continue to be underrepresented across all networks.”
GLAAD reviewed a total of 4,901 hours of primetime programming for inclusion of LGBT characters or issues on the five major networks (ABC, CBS, The CW, Fox and NBC) from June 1, 2008 to May 31, 2009. GLAAD also examined 1,212.5 hours of original primetime programming on 10 highly-rated cable networks. Each hour was reviewed for on-screen LGBT representations. Based on the quantity, overall quality and diversity of these representations, a rating was assigned by GLAAD’s Entertainment Media Program to each network: Excellent, Good, Adequate, or Failing.
Additional findings from the GLAAD Network Responsibility Index:
Good
- HBO and Showtime received grades of Good, with HBO leading with 42 percent of programming hours featuring LGBT representations.
- ABC, with shows including Brothers & Sisters, Grey’s Anatomy and Ugly Betty, again received the highest ranking of the five broadcast networks, earning a Good grade with 24 percent of their primetime programming hours including LGBT representations.
- The CW also received a grade of Good, with 20 percent of their primetime programming hours including LGBT representations.
Adequate
- While Fox received an Adequate, rising from last place and a Failing grade in 2008; 11 percent of its programming hours were LGBT-inclusive, yet some of those hours included problematic content.
- Among cable networks evaluated, TNT showed the largest growth, jumping from one percent of LGBT inclusive primetime programming hours last year to 19 percent. FX posted the sharpest decline, dropping 32 percent over the previous season. Both were graded
Failing
- NBC and CBS received Failing grades, for their 8 and 5 percent, respectively, of programming hours with LGBT images. CBS moved down from third place in last year’s GLAAD Network Responsibility Index to last among the five major broadcast networks.
- A&E, Sci Fi and TBS received grades of Failing.
“Television shows that weave our stories into the fabric of the series present richer, more accurate representations and are the kinds of images that help Americans understand and embrace their LGBT family members, friends and neighbors in a more meaningful way,” said Robinson.
The third annual GLAAD Network Responsibility Index was delivered to programming executives at the 15 graded networks, and GLAAD’s Entertainment Media Program will continue discussions with them to advocate for improvements in the quality, quantity and diversity of their LGBT representations.
The Executive Summary of the report can be viewed online at GLAAD.org. A PDF of the full report can also be downloaded at GLAAD.org.
The 14th Annual GLAAD Where We Are On TV report on diversity will be issued in September 2009. This analysis will examine LGBT inclusion as well as the gender and race/ethnicity of all scripted characters scheduled to appear during the 2009-2010 season.

Gay Marriage Will Benefit Ailing Economy
Gay marriage as an attack on small businesses? Because said small businesses would have to pay healthcare? Not even close, Michael Steel, chairperson of the Republican National Committee. That is a lie. What gay marriage can do for the country is add a whopping $16.8 billion toward the “gross national wedding product.” Engagement rings alone, according to a Forbes study, would run at $1.8 billion a year. And that money would positively affect, you guessed it, small businesses.
Gay marriage is a “really simple to understand goldmine.”
You know, same-sex marriage just doesn’t sound evil to us. Not in the slightest bit. Probably because it isn’t.
As always, for comprehensive coverage about civil marriage equality in California, please visit Stop8.org. And to find out which neighbor of yours you should ask over for tea, sympathy, and the to let them know that you’re a human being just like them, GLBT folks, check out and see which one of them gave money to Prop 8 at eightmaps.

Equality Utah uses the LDS own words in a new campaign for Gay Rights
The day after Proposition 8, a Mormon supported ballot measure that outlawed same-sex marriage, passed in California, the Utah-based Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints released a formal statement saying, “the church does not object to rights for same-sex couples regarding hospitalization and medical care, fair housing and employment rights, or probate rights.”
Last week however, a Utah bill that would have allowed two people who live together and who are mutually dependent and named in a will or trust to a wrongful death court action if a tragedy occurred, was defeated in a state senate committee after opponents of the bill argued that offering any legal recognition to same-sex couples, including the right to sue when a breadwinner suffers a wrongful death, could lead to a court decision legalizing gay marriage.
This week in an effort to sway voters in that state and prevent other of Equality Utah’s legislative initiative’s remaining bills from going down in flames, Equality Utah has come out swinging with a major multimedia ad blitz that turn the tables and proclaims…
“The Church does not object to rights for same-sex couples …”
In a press statement Equality Utah said…
Several polls have indicated that the majority of Utahns support the reasonable and basic protections provided for in the legislation of the Common Ground
Initiative.
Yet lawmakers rebuffed one of the Common Ground Initiative bills last week, recalling tired arguments that the proposals are somehow an attack on traditional marriage.
Far from pessimistic about the ability of Utah legislators see passed the tired arguments that surfaced during last week’s hearing, Equality Utah has launched a media campaign to help raise awareness of the reasonableness and broad public support of the basic ideals of the Common Ground Initiative.
“We’ve modeled our legislative proposals directly from the statements of the LDS Church,” said Mike Thompson, Equality Utah’s Executive Director. “We’re talking about basic rights that have broad public support and have nothing to do with marriage. We hope this media campaign will help Utahns see passed the fear-based arguments used against this legislation.”

Gay marriage fault lines in San Mateo County
Proposition 8, the State Constitutional Amendment recently passed by California voters, was arguably one of the most divisive pieces of public policy placed before the voters since Proposition 187, the anti-illegal immigrant initiative which was passed by voters in 1994.
Proposition 8 is the Constitutional Amendment that eliminated the right of same-sex couples to marry in California and established that only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California.
Proposition 8 passed by the narrow margin of 6,838,107 votes in support, or 52.3%, to 6,246,463 votes against, or 47.7% in the State. In San Mateo County, Proposition 8 failed by a wide margin of 114,695 votes in support, or 38.3%, to 185,127 votes against, or 61.7%.
Since its passage, many of those of donated in support of the measure have been subject to unpleasant phone calls and letters, some of which contained foul language and physical threats. Web sites like AntiGayBlacklist.com posted donors’ names and home addresses on Google maps and there have been calls for boycotts of the businesses of donors.

London to market to gay travellers
London could literally soon be front and centre on the gay and lesbian tourism map.
Tourism London met last week with politicians, gay activists and the owner of Fun Maps, a New Jersey-based gay publication that reaches more than 3.5 million readers.
London will be part of a new edition of Fun Maps’ Toronto and Niagara Region map when it comes out in July, said Peter Richer, president of the London Gay Community Centre.
“It’s a gay magazine, but we want to recognize the diversity in London. Anything that’s a gay-friendly business in London could go in,” Richer said.
The Toronto Fun Map — like a travel guide — will feature 12 to 18 pages added with London listings, Richer said.
