Thousands turn out for Jerusalem’s Gay Pride parade

About 2,000 participants in a gay pride parade have marched peacefully through Jerusalem.

In past years, the gay pride event in the holy city provoked violent protests, even stabbings, by ultra-Orthodox Jews and extremists. But this year, except for one egg-throwing incident, there were no clashes.

Police said they arrested the egg-tossing protester. Others put up signs and demonstrated in an ultra-Orthodox section of Jerusalem, far away from the parade See Thousands turn out for Jerusalem’s Gay Pride parade Ha’aretz

NY exhibit on gay rights hits amid marriage debate

As exhibitions go, the New York Public Library’s “1969: The Year of Gay Liberation” could hardly have chosen better timing.
With debate raging over same-sex marriage across the United States, the library in midtown Manhattan opened the exhibit on Monday to mark the 40th anniversary of the so-called Stonewall riots that triggered the modern U.S. gay rights movement.
Photos, documents, clippings from the gay media and other artifacts illustrate what was a shocking development at the time: homosexual men and women coming out of the closet to demonstrate for their civil rights, often at great risk.
The free exhibit will run at the main branch all of June.
“We tend to forget how radical these activists were. They risked their lives and safety for this cause. That’s what this exhibition is about,” said Jason Baumann, the curator.
Starting around June 28, 1969, the Stonewall riots refer to a week of violent clashes on Christopher Street in Greenwich Village between patrons of a gay bar called the Stonewall and police who had periodically raided the bar, arresting gays under morals laws of the era. Group Begins Ad Blitz Against Same-Sex Marriage

The National Organization for Marriage, a conservative Christian group that has fought efforts to legalize same-sex marriage in California and in the Northeast, has set its sights on New York with its latest media campaign.

Beginning Thursday in the New York City and Albany markets, the organization will run a 30-second television commercial that warns of unanticipated social consequences if the state allows gay couples to marry.

Echoing a theme that was used in turning public opinion against same-sex marriage in California in a vote last fall, the commercial suggests that children will be taught about homosexuality in schools.

“And it’s not just kids who face consequences,” the narrator says over foreboding music. “The rights of people who believe marriage means a man and a woman will no longer matter. We’ll have to accept gay marriage whether we like it or not.”

The commercial closes with a shot of the Capitol as the number for the State Senate switchboard flashes on the screen. The Senate must act in the next four weeks if it is to pass a same-sex marriage bill before the Legislature adjourns. The Assembly passed the bill this month, and Gov. David A. Paterson has pledged to sign it.

The National Organization for Marriage said its initial ad spending, which includes the television commercial and a radio spot, was just over $100,000. That campaign will run through Sunday.

The group said it hopes the commercial, which is intended to raise doubts about an argument made by advocates for same-sex marriage — that allowing gay couples to marry is simply a matter of fairness and equality — will give opponents a louder voice in a debate that has been dominated by the other side. Activist dedicates his life to fight for gay rights

Across the floor of the Geneva human rights conference, Arsham Parsi spotted the Iranian government representative.
This was his chance. In 2005, Parsi fled Iran after police found out he was a homosexual rights activist.
But, Geneva was not the Islamic Republic.
Homosexual rights have been mired in controversy worldwide. At present, there are 58 countries that punish it — nine with death. The regime of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is so horrifying, 28-year-old Parsi has dedicated his life to fighting the extreme brutality.
“A friend once told me I didn’t decide to become an activist,” says Parsi. “Society forced me to.”
Parsi felt his heart pound as he approached the official. Understandable. His government punishes kissing with 60 lashes and sodomy with death. Iranian courts’ requirement for witnesses is little assurance. Police will raid birthday parties and formally charge suspected homosexuals for drinking.
Then, there is the interrogation.
“When my friend was arrested, they asked him to identify people by pictures in an album,” says Parsi. See Activist dedicates his life to fight for gay rights
