Gillibrand wins Senate hearing on military policy on gays

New York‘s Sen. href=”/topics/Kirsten_Gillibrand”>Kirsten Gillibrand said Monday she had won the commitment of the Senate Armed Services Committee to hold its first hearing this fall on the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays in the military.

The announcement is unusual because Gillibrand does not sit on the panel and did not push the issue in the last Congress, when she served on the House Armed Services Committee.

But the agreement by Senate Armed Services chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich.) capped a campaign Gillibrand has been waging in the last few weeks to scrap or suspend the controversial policy that has led the Pentagon to discharge thousands of gays and lesbians since 1994.

The Senate Armed Services Committee will hold hearings on Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell – the first hearings to be held on gays in the military since 1993.

The hearings come at the prompting of Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) after she realized she would be unable to secure the votes needed for …

Military Gay Discharge Moratorium Bill A Non-Starter

New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has decided not to pursue a senate amendment that would pause military discharges based on sexual orientation, gay weekly the Washington Blade reported.

Gillibrand, the freshman senator appointed by Governor David Paterson after President Obama tapped Hillary Clinton to head the State Department, signaled last week she would introduce the reform as an amendment to a Defense Department reauthorization bill.

The amendment would place an 18-month moratorium on the military gay ban, also known as “don’t ask, don’t tell,” the law that prescribes discharge for gay and lesbian service members who do not remain celibate or closeted.

Quinn’s US Senate Diplomacy

Unlike Mayor Bloomberg, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn didn’t jump to Caroline Kennedy’s defense today when asked if Kennedy had gotten a “raw deal” from Gov. David Paterson during the much-maligned US Senate selection process.

Quinn chose to diplomatically skirt the question, the DN’s Frank Lombardi reports, saying:

“Caroline decided to drop out for personal reasons. I obviously, you know, wish her and her family well as regard to whatever this personal situation is.

“And I think what we all need to do now is get back to work, focus on the large agenda in Washington right now. We’re lucky that we have two senators right now fighting for us in Washington, not one. And we all need to work together and try to make sure that New York gets its appropriate share of the federal stimulus package.

“…So I think the focus now shouldn’t be on the past and what happened; the focus should be on moving forward for the city and state of New York and working with our senators to do that.”

Quinn also confirmed she chatted on the phone with Congresswoman-turned-Senator Kirsten Gillibrand  See Quinn’s US Senate Diplomacy

Paterson announces Gillibrand as new NY Senator

(New York City) New York Gov. David Paterson on Friday named U.S. Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill New York’s vacant U.S. Senate seat.

Gillibrand, 42, is a second-term lawmaker from upstate New York. She is a proven vote-getter in a largely rural eastern New York district that sprawls from the mid-Hudson …

Van Cappelle Says Gillibrand Supports Gay Marriage

Empire State Pride Agenda Executve Director Alan Van Cappelle is firmly behind the selection of ostensibly non-liberal Democratic congresswoman Kirsten Gillibrand for the senate.

“After talking to Kirsten Gillibrand, I am very happy to say that New York is poised to have its first U.S. Senator who supports marriage equality for same-sex couples,” said Van Capelle in a statement. “She also supports the full repeal of the federal DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) law, repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell (DADT) and passage of legislation outlawing discrimination against transgender people. While we had a productive discussion about a whole range of LGBT concerns, I was particularly happy to hear where she stands on these issues.”
