Brüno’ Actor Shucks Clothes for Gay Mag Cover

Homophobic Film Ever Made?” That’s the blurb on the cover of Attitude, a British gay magazine, where comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, posing nude to promote his new film, appears.
The film in question–and the name of the character, whom Cohen continues to portray in live promotional appearances–is Brüno, in which Cohen plays a gay fashionista seeking redemption during a global road trip.
The production reportedly drew trouble for Cohen, who was arrested several times during the shoot.
But the film’s reception has also been mixed, with dubious and even hostile reactions coming from the GLBT community.
Though the film reportedly seeks to skewer homophobia, some GLBT equality advocates worry that “Brüno” will actually threaten social progress made by gays in the last several years by presenting audiences with a flamboyant gay character.
A July 1 article at the UK newspaper The Daily Mail reported that Cohen’s appearance on the cover of Attitude was meant to “appease” gay audiences.
The article pointed out that Cohen also appeared nude on the cover of GQ magazine.
Last month, Cohen appeared at the film’s London premiere in character, and in a revealing costume that riffed on the traditional uniforms of the Queen’s Guards, drawing headlines in the process. See Brüno’ Actor Shucks Clothes for Gay Mag Cover

Artist Known for Gay Subjects ‘Outed’ As Prop. 8 Supporter
An artist known for her gay-themed work has inspired controversy for having made a $1,000 contribution to proponents of California’s Proposition 8, the ballot initiative that put the rights of gay and lesbian families up to popular vote and saw those rights taken away last November by a slim majority at the ballot box.
LoHud.com reported in a Feb. 5 article that Chappaqua, NY artist Maureen Mullarkey, whose paintings have drawn on Pride events and cross-dressing performers as subject material, had made the contribution to the anti-gay side of the ballot initiative, shocking and angering many in the GLBT community.
Said David Juhren of GLBT group LOFT, “There’s something very duplicitous in making money through depiction of the LGBT community through her art [which then is donated to an anti-gay cause],” the article reported.
Added Juhren, who serves as LOFT’s director of communications, “She’s relatively well-known, and that’s why it’s kind of a slap in the face.” See Artist Known for Gay Subjects ’Outed’ As Prop. 8 Supporter

Discovery Health Features Two Groundbreaking GLBT Profiles in TRANSGENDER M.D. and FOSTERING LOVE
(Silver Spring, Md.) — This month, Discovery Health will air two programs profiling incredible stories about members of the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) community. TRANSGENDER M.D. — premiering Thursday, February 12 at 8 PM ET/PT — follows the medical practice of Dr. Marci Bowers, the only OB/GYN in the tiny town of Trinidad, Colorado. Dr. Bowers is world-renowned for her progressive work in the field of gender reassignment and is the reason that Trinidad has become known as “the sex change capital of the world.” But Dr. Bowers has a secret — she was actually a “he.” Originally born male, Dr. Bowers formerly was known as Mark, a married father of three who came out with his desire to become a woman and underwent gender transition from 1996-1998. Today, Dr. Bowers lives happily as a woman with her partner in Trinidad. TRANSGENDER M.D. showcases Dr. Bowers’ dedicated work as she endeavors to give patients the same opportunity that she had, and the lives they have always wanted.
Premiering Wednesday, February 18 at 8 PM, FOSTERING LOVE is the story of a married same-sex couple in California with more than enough love to go around. Meet Jim and Mark, parents with an ever-growing family comprised of biological, foster and adopted children. Together for six years, Mark and Jim recently decided to move their brood from the city to the country to live and work on an alpaca farm. Amid this change, Mark and Jim are attempting to adopt Olivia, a baby girl they have fostered since birth — but complications with Olivia’s birth mother threaten to interfere with their dreams. Discovery Health’s cameras capture the joy and occasional frustration that come along with raising a family full of infants, toddlers and teenagers, while attending to a barnyard full of animals.
TRANSGENDER M.D. and FOSTERING LOVE are produced for Discovery Health by MEg TV. For Discovery Health, Lisa Lucas is executive producer and for MEg TV, Nancy Saslow is executive producer.

San Francisco band to make history at inaugural
San Francisco members of the Lesbian and Gay Band Association and a Saratoga middle school marching band are the only two groups in California tapped to march down Pennsylvania Avenue in what is set to be an historic inauguration parade.
Twenty-six members of the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Freedom Band and Cheer San Franciscowere selected from the Lesbian and Gay Band Association’s thousands of members nationwide to participate in the Jan. 20 event.
“I think it is great that the event is continuing the inclusion of the GLBT community in the important activities of our nation,” said Paul Boneberg, executive director of the GLBT Historical Society in San Francisco. “I say congratulations to Obama for enhancing the visibility of our community by having them march.”
Doug Litwin, a clarinet player in the San Francisco band, said this is the first time an openly gay band has marched, although his band played on the sidelines during both Clinton inauguration parades.
“It was an amazing experience to be openly gay and participate, but this time we get to actually march in the parade,” Litwin said. “It is a bigger deal symbolically to be moving with the contingent.”
More than 1,400 marching bands applied to be in the parade that will follow Barack Obama’s swearing in at the Capitol on Jan. 20. To date, 70 have been selected.
