For one gay UK officer, a time to stand and be counted

(London)  For more than a decade, he had prepared for that moment.

Lt. Cmdr. Craig Jones climbed the staircase into the captain’s cabin, with its porthole overlooking the sea and its matched pictures of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. The captain paused in a conversation with his executive …

Southwark votes in first openly gay mayor

The first openly gay mayor of Southwark, south-east London, has been elected.
Councillor Jeff Hook, whose full title will be The Worshipful The Mayor of Southwark, will take on the role for the 2009-10 period with his civil partner as his official consort.
Speaking to PinkNews.co.uk, Mr Hook said that although he is the first openly gay mayor in Southwark, he is not the first in the UK. Robert Crossman who served as Mayor of Islington in 1986-7, is believed to hold that title.
Regarding the importance of public figures’ openness about their sexuality, he said: “I’d like a situation where it’s not an issue. A gay person can ride to the top as much as anyone else.”
Mr Hook, the representative for Rotherhithe, reportedly took on tough competition in the run-up to being elected. See Southwark votes in first openly gay mayor

Gay men ‘at risk’ as UK rates for new HIV infections soar to highest in Europe

Charity Unicef has warned that Britain now has the highest number of new HIV infections in western Europe, with gay and bisexual men and black Africans most at risk.
In 2007, there were more than 7,700 new HIV diagnoses in the UK and the organisation has also said infection rates in young people are rising, with ten per cent of new infections occurring in those aged between 16 and 24.
The second highest figure for new infections was in France, with 4,075. Germany, which has ten million more people than Britain, had 2,752 new cases. See Gay men ‘at risk’ as UK rates for new HIV infections soar to …

Gay Take on Shakespeare Sets Off UK Row

For GLBT students in London, it must have been a romantic dream come true to see their lives and feelings depicted on the stage in a work pf passion and sweeping poetry authored by none other than William Shakespeare.

For others, however, the idea of a gay version of “Romeo and Juliet” called “Romeo and Julian” is “political correctness gone mad.”

The play was adapted by the London high schoolers in January for LGTB History Month.

But the kids’ playful reinterpretation of a timeless classic to pertain to their own lives ruffled some feathers, reported The Hindustan Times in a Feb. 28 article. See Gay Take on Shakespeare Sets Off UK Row
