Withers: Hockey GM fights homophobia in schools
[1] [2]
Brian Burke [3], the GM for the Toronto Maple Leafs, was the main speaker when Egale Canada [4], the country’s national gay and lesbian political rights organization, launched a new site. Called MyGSA.ca [5], the web address serves as an information center for Canadian teachers and their gay and lesbian students.Burke talked about his son, Brendan [6]; the young man, a senior at Miami University and advocate for gay rights, died in an early February car accident. Before his untimely death, father and son were profiled on ESPN [7]. The story focused on a young gay man and the support he received from his father, family, and the Maple Leafs organization.
The elder Burke wants to continue the good work his son started. This means making sure gay and lesbian students can attend school without harassment
“I hate bullies,” he said. “We have to get to the point where everyone can go to school free of fear.” [8]
Burke is convinced there is a closeted player in the NHL, but fear keeps that unknown player from stepping out. It’s not clear if Burke by himself can sweep that away. That job takes more than one man; however, he gets points for being a great father and doing his best to make sure no kid feels he/she has to hide.

Washington Blade back on newsstands Friday
It’s Washington Blade. No, it’s DC Agenda [1]. No, it’s Washington Blade, again.
The Washington Blade, Washington, D.C.’s 40-year-old LGBT publication, will be returning to newsstands on Friday under its original name. In November, Windows Media, which owned the Blade and a host of other LGBT publications across the country, went belly up [2], declaring bankruptcy and unexpectedly telling employees the publications would cease.
Immediately, former staffers of the Blade created DC Agenda, an online LGBT news site.
[3]
This week, DC Agenda’s owners announced a win in bankruptcy court that included being awarded the Blade name, all trademarks and copyrights and the entire 40-year archive.
DC Agenda surveyed readers on whether to return to the Washington Blade name. The majority of respondents favored the move.
“The power, effectiveness and strength of the Washington Blade came from the spirit and intensity of those who wrote the stories and worked with the local community,” publisher Lynne Brown told DC Agenda [4]. “We now have the opportunity to both restore and refresh a powerful, venerable news gathering institution and to make the treasure trove of our vibrant gay rights and liberation movement history accessible to the public.

Ruby-Sachs: Barbara Boxer the wrong Senator to protest
[1]
Yesterday, Obama was heckled at a California fundraiser for Senator Barbara Boxer. Boxer has been holding fundraisers across the country in order to gear up for a heated and difficult race in the upcoming election. If Sarah Palin were in charge of this blog, there’d be a big sign with Senator Boxer’s face in the crosshairs – the conservatives are gunning for her this time around.
The thing is, as much as we dislike Obama and his wishy washy approach to gay rights advocacy, we love Senator Boxer. Boxer has, when it comes to gay rights, been a staunch supporter of equality. She received a 100% rating from the Human Rights Campaign, spoke out about gay rights and actually is one of the few politicians to support gay marriage. She is a liberal activist politician in a landscape of conservative values and inaction on both sides of the aisle. She is exactly the kind of candidate we, as a community, should support.
Instead, we decided that a fundraiser where Obama (read not much of an advocate for gay rights) was doing his best to support Boxer was a perfect opportunity to highlight the President’s inaction of LGBT issues. This when Boxer is praying patrons open their cheque books and cough up a bit more money for her campaign. It doesn’t mean that the hecklers weren’t right in their criticism, Obama is hugely problematic when it comes to equality advocacy, but they needed to choose a different time to engage in that discussion.
The night is over and we can hope that Boxer got some of the funds she needs out of the event. Still, I hope that the people from Get Equal choose a more opportune moment to engage in protest. In the mean time, if they are serious about equality perhaps they should spend time raising a few dollars for Senator Boxer and her progressive agenda.
